We had a great time visiting and essentials store recently. We ran two hands on cookery workshop making delicious "no cook" recipes for people to take home with them. As well as signposting people to join our community cookery classes and giving out easy to use recipe booklets. 🍜
“I’m really bad at following recipes, but Id like to be better and this was so simple.”- participant
We made our "just add hot water" noodle pots with delicious veggies and overnight oats. They went down a treat and were delicious, cheap & nutritious alternatives to ready made store bought versions. ⭐
“I struggle with food textures, this is a great way for me to try overnight oats, something I have wanted to make but was concerned I would find the texture difficult”- participant
These sessions were run on behalf of the Community Kitchen charity – thanks to our funders

This East Asian inspired slaw we made in our Dementia Friendly Cookery class this week is perfect for your bank holiday BBQ. ☀️
Serves: 4
INGREDIENTS ⭐️
1/2 red or white cabbage
2 spring onions
1 tsp salt
1 carrot
1/2 red pepper
Small bunch of coriander
Juice of 1/2 a lime
1/2 tbsp of sesame oil
Salt and pepper
Sesame seeds
Method:
Shred or slice the cabbage as thinly as possible. slice the spring onion thinly.
Put in a large bowl and sprinkle with 1 tsp of salt.
If you have time, leave for half an hour, as this allows the cabbage to soften slightly.
Peel and grate the carrot. Chop the red pepper into very thin slices. Combine with the cabbage and onion in the bowl.
Chop the coriander. Mix the coriander, lime juice & sesame oil, with the chopped veggies. Add salt and pepper to suit your taste, adding a small amount at a time.
Sprinkle with sesame seeds.

Our BRAND NEW community class Get Food & Money Smart, in collaboration with Money Advice Plus, launched last week with 2 classes- Our pilot session, with community food volunteers & staff, and our first community session. ⭐
In the classes we learnt how to make budget-savvy recipes and explored tips for meal planning on a budget, to help people eat well and pack nutrition into their meals. We made a tomato soup, added delicious toppings to instant noodles and whipped up a mackerel pate. 😋
"The class is very useful, especially as you are using ingredients we commonly find at the food bank, such a instant noodles, tinned tomatoes & tinned fish."- Food bank volunteer at our pilot session. 💚
We were also joined by Money Advice Plus who shared tips on tracking spend, cutting costs and building confidence with money management.💪
These classes are run on behalf of the Community Kitchen charity – thanks to our funders The MSE Charity.
