We regularly make these simple versatile flatbreads in our community cookery classes. They are perfect for lunches, side dishes and summer BBQs.
Ingredients
350g self-raising flour
1 tsp baking powder
350g natural yoghurt
Pinch of salt (approximately ¼ tsp)
15-20g (any) flour for dusting
20g garlic butter (optional)
Method
Add all the flour, baking powder, yogurt and salt into a mixing bowl and mix together with a spoon.
Using clean hands pat and bring everything together.
Dust a clean work surface with flour, then tip out the dough.
Knead for a minute or so to bring it all together (this isn't a traditional bread recipe, so you don't need to knead it for long – just enough time to bring everything together).
Add more flour to the surface if needed. Divide the dough into 8 equal sized balls, then, using your hands, flatten the dough into rough flatbread oval shapes, roughly 1/2cm thick. Make a few cuts in the bread in the middle (this helps with the cooking)
Place a pan on a high heat, then once hot, cook each one for 1 to 2 minutes on each side, or until charred and puffed up, turning with tongs.
Brush with garlic butter if using and serve.

At the Community Kitchen, we support families to build kitchen confidence and enjoy nutritious, delicious, and budget-friendly meals. ⭐
As part of that mission, we’ve spent the last five years hosting primary school children from across Brighton & Hove for a fun, hands-on cooking course. The transformation over each three weeks course is incredible. 👨🍳👩🍳
On day one, many children have never cooked before and turn their noses up at anything green. By the end, they are confidently making recipes from scratch, eagerly trying new veggies, and safely handling knives and hot pans.🍳
“When our Year Five children… cook with the Community Kitchen team, they’re not just learning recipes and important life skills— they’re discovering confidence, teamwork and the joy of creating something that brings the class together.”- Class Teacher

We had a great time visiting and essentials store recently. We ran two hands on cookery workshop making delicious "no cook" recipes for people to take home with them. As well as signposting people to join our community cookery classes and giving out easy to use recipe booklets. 🍜
“I’m really bad at following recipes, but Id like to be better and this was so simple.”- participant
We made our "just add hot water" noodle pots with delicious veggies and overnight oats. They went down a treat and were delicious, cheap & nutritious alternatives to ready made store bought versions. ⭐
“I struggle with food textures, this is a great way for me to try overnight oats, something I have wanted to make but was concerned I would find the texture difficult”- participant
These sessions were run on behalf of the Community Kitchen charity – thanks to our funders
