Day and Boarding for girls aged 11-18, at a unique cliff-top location near Brighton
Roedean School in East Sussex is a popular independent day and boarding school for girls aged 11-18. Established in 1885, the School’s striking position on a cliff east of Brighton, at the foot of the South Downs National Park, offers the best of dynamic city life and calming coastal surroundings to inspire, refresh, and invigorate pupils. Roedean is extremely accessible: the School is 30 minutes
from Gatwick by car and offers a chaperoned “Victoria Escort” for girls taking the 53-minute journey between Brighton Station and London Victoria on Friday and Sunday evenings. At Roedean, students develop a love for learning, and the School encourages girls to aim high academically while seeking out other passions. The School believes pupils should enjoy a holistic education that nurtures their talents, sparks their curiosity, and encourages personal growth across a variety of fields. Outstanding GCSE and A Level results are only part of the story, as Roedean girls grow into resilient, creative, and confident young women with multi-faceted interests and skills, free from external pressures and expectations. Creative and performing arts lie at the core of Roedean’s holistic ethos, encouraging girls to find their voices on the stage of its 350-seat professional theatre in productions like Matilda, Cabaret, and Romeo and Juliet, with chances to shine in annual music and dance showcases too. Meanwhile, sporting life at Roedean School is deeply inclusive, and girls of all abilities and ambition get stuck into 14 sports, including football, tennis, swimming, athletics, off-site horse-riding, and sailing. Roedean School has an even split of day and boarding pupils hailing from over 40 countries. With such a range of cultures and backgrounds represented, the School’s atmosphere is open and dynamic, and girls develop a deep understanding and respect for others. Roedean has a strong social conscience too, with girls supporting the local and wider community through charitable causes and outreach programmes. With impressive reports from many school guides and, recently, perfect scores from the Independent Schools Inspectorate, Roedean School has a proud reputation as a truly inspirational place for girls to learn and grow, with endless opportunities for self-expression and development.

During their Wild Friday sessions, our Year 7 students have been enjoying outdoor cooking as part of their Bushcraft activities. The outdoor experiences that make up our Wild Friday programme not only enhance practical life skills but also build resilience and support mental well being. 🏞️
Their Bushcraft sessions have included making dough twists over a campfire, as well as taking part in a Ready Steady Cook–style challenge using Trangia stoves. Working in teams, they were given identical ingredients and challenged to create and cook their own menus. 🍳

Trips to Wakehurst Botanical Gardens provided enriching fieldwork opportunities, with younger students exploring plant reproduction and seed dispersal through hands-on lab work, while older students investigated biodiversity and the role of ex situ conservation in addressing global environmental challenges. 🌱
By connecting classroom study with real-world scientific research, these experiences helped deepen understanding of the importance of plants to our future and help spark genuine curiosity in our students about the natural world. 🌍
