The dreaded cold - or worse, laryngitis or cough/chest infection - for a singer...π±
It actually feels vulnerable to share this, as admitting I haven't been singing publicly feels like people might see me as less of a teacher. (I'll do another post about saying no and not singing another time.)
I do have some singing in the diary for autumn/winter - I wonder when the next upper respiratory tract infection will show up?!π€ππ

Love singing in choir and want a few lessons in singing more easily?
Perhaps you know your voice could probably be more naturally suited to another voice part but you don't want to move?
Maybe you go to choir for fun in your free time and don't feel the need to be trained into singing for solo work.
Great. Let's start where you are and what you feel you want and need.
A couple of people have recently come to me and said they were clear they were not looking for a teacher who would make them sing like a professional. They wanted someone who would help them sing with more enjoyment, for fun.
Great! We have the freedom of doing whatever songs you want to do, and can find the best way for you to sing them with as much joy as possible!ππ
(However... to be clear... please don't reject me from the singing teacher world, singing teacher powers!...
If you come to me, saying you want to audition for a solo role in an opera/for something at a more professional level, I might gently suggest you/we check the role and choose something that is for your natural voice type, in the original key. I would be doing you a disservice if I didn't.)
Most of my students are not looking for that. They just want to connect with their voices and enjoy their singing. We start with what feels good for them and go from there.
How does it feel to have booked your first singing lesson? Especially if you'd been meaning to do it for AGES?
Exciting and terrifying in equal measures??
Maybe my experience with the double bass and joining an orchestra is a bit similar?
We agreed I would go to watch a rehearsal in a couple of weeks, which felt like a nice way in.
And then they said, "why not bring the bass to the rehearsal, in case you want to have a play?!" π²π€―ππ¬β¨οΈ
Very interesting. So much I agree with here about the importance of emotion. And definitely a conversation of its time, with some assumptions I'd hope aren't made as much, and of course singing teaching and what we know about the voice has developed somewhat!
But worth a listen.

The Science of Why Singing Makes You Feel Better The Science of Why Singing Makes You Feel Better Most people I meet tell me they are definitely NOT a singer! The very idea of singing in front of another person fills them with dread. Perhaps this is you. And yet, something in you wants to sing. Maybe itβs only in the confines of the shower (in a...

Vocal Exploration Mornings start regularly on Saturday 25th!
http://lucymair.com/group-singing
Breathe out. Breathe out slowly, with a consistent flow of air. Do that with voice and you have the very basics of singing.
Anyone who's ever looked into how to help anxiety will have seen that the outbreath needs to be slower and longer, to activate the parasympathetic nervous system.
My Vocal Exploration Group starts with a large dose of this breathwork, before bringing voice in and then gently moving into singing and voice exploration.
Next one is 25th April 10:30am, in Rottingdean.
Come and reset your nervous system via singing and voice work!
