Young Engineers - Brighton & Hove and Mid-Sussex provides young children with insight into the world of STEM whilst building and playing with lego models specially designed to engage them in the principles of science and mechanics.

03/06/2026

The Young Engineers Holiday Club invites children to dive into the world of mechanics, engineering, and creative problem‑solving through building lego models designed by us to demonstrate science and mechanics. Each session blends play with real critical thinking, giving children the chance to explore how everyday machines work by building them from the inside out.

Theme: Wind, Water and Air
This week the children will get to build and experiment with a range of wind and water powered machines or models that fly, including, but not limited to:
- Wind-Powered Cars
- Wind Turbines
- Personal Fans
- 3-Speed fans
- Sand Yachts
- Water-Jet Powered Rockets
- Airplane
- Helicopter
- Seagulls
- And plenty more incredible machines

Every model is designed to reveal the mechanisms behind real‑world engineering—gears, pulleys, linkages, rotations, and more. As they build, children are encouraged to test ideas, spot what each mechanism does, and even improve the designs using their own creativity.

Learning Through Play

Things won’t always work the first time—and that’s the point. Children learn to:
- Troubleshoot and problem‑solve
- Work collaboratively
- Think like engineers
- Explore cause and effect
- Build confidence through hands‑on experimentation

And, to make sure lego is not all they do in the day, alongside the model builds, children will also have opportunities to design and construct their own structures using other STEM media, putting their imagination and engineering instincts to the test.

Circular to oscillating motion makes the pirate ship swing back and forth.

Last week at Windlesham School, Toby added helicopter blades to his pullback race car powered by wound-up elastic bands. Brilliant redesign!

So, it's whacky races and incredible machines this coming half-term so here's just one of the models the children could build and play with.... Farmer's Tractor with bucket down and plow up or bucket up and plow down. the choice is theirs to make but it could also be both down or both up. Many hours of engineering a solution!

There will be breaks morning, lunchtime and afternoon breaks to allow the children to get some fresh air and run off some steam.

Easter is a time to build Bunny Expresses. Here are some examples of what children create at our Easter Holiday Club sessions. There are still some places available next week so why not send your children along?! Book at: https://bookwhen.com/brightyoungengrs/?tags=HOLIDAY_CLUB
