Great reminder from about the amazing neuroplasticity of our brains.

🧠 Neuroplasticity refers to the lifelong capacity of the brain to change and rewire itself in response to the stimulation of learning and experience.

🧠 It takes approximately 400 repetitions to create a new synapse in the brain, unless it is fine through play and then it takes only 10-20 repetitions. (Dr. Karyn Purvis)

I often refer to the window of tolerance in my play therapy sessions. This is a great visual from showing some of the feelings we may experience in hyper/hypo arousal and also in the ‘optimal zone’. It also links to polyvagal theory which I’d encourage all parents/carers to research and read up on.

This post from came at the right time in the Easter holidays for me. A really useful reminder that it’s not about being the perfect parent. Rupture and repair is a vital part of any relationship. As parents, this allows us to model how to make healthy and connected amends when we make mistakes in our relationships.

I love this quote. This is a message I regularly share with my clients. Children often come to play therapy lacking in confidence in their unique strengths and abilities. Play therapy sessions gradually build self esteem and help children to see their individual brilliance shining through.

As the parent of a neurodivergent child, my family celebrate neurodiversity every day. I’m forever in awe of the strengths and creativity my child shows each day, despite the challenges he can face.

Play therapy has been shown to help neurodivergent children understand social navigation, improve emotional expression and regulation ability (Salter, Beamish, & Davies, 2016).

Most importantly, play therapy allows children a safe space to explore their identity, recognise their strengths and build a therapeutic relationship.

💤This weekend I’ve been taking time to recharge.

💤Early nights can feel hard to do! I crave time to myself once my children are in bed, so end up staying up later to achieve this. This weekend I’ve made myself go to bed before 10pm and it’s made a big difference.

What is Happy Calm?

Launching in Brighton and Hove, Happy Calm toddler classes offer a calm space where families can switch off from their busy lives to connect and play together. As well as a selection of highly structured activities, Happy Calm toddler classes will also provide you with lots of simple ideas to build in daily positive connections with your child.

There are three fun elements to each session.

Connect. Nurture. Play.

CONNECT

Short, fun games allowing you to connect with your child through positive nurturing touch and play. Our games allow lots of opportunities to develop your child’s confidence and resilience.

NURTURE

Each week you will take part in a nurturing check-in with your child. Be fully present in the moment and attend to your child’s ‘ouches’ using our calm kit. A parent or carer’s nurturing touch will enhance attachment and promote a sense of security and connection. Nurturing touch can help our levels of stress hormones to drop and levels of our happy hormones to increase.

PLAY

Without the need to plan and resource activities, our toddler classes allow you to be fully present during your child’s play. We offer carefully planned, calming and structured play opportunities that help to build your child’s resilience and confidence in a fun and engaging way. Working together with your child, our activities will allow you to problem solve together and have fun at the same time. Each week you and your child will have the opportunity to participate in activities focused around:

· Sorting and matching

· Noticing and searching

· Multisensory play

· Construction
