When was the last time you truly rested?

Not scrolled. Not dozed off in front of another box set. Not laying awake at 3am with your mind running through tomorrow's to-do list. I mean rested. Deeply, consciously, completely. If you're struggling to remember, you're not alone. And you're exactly who Yoga Nidra was made for.

So What Is Yoga Nidra, Exactly?

Yoga Nidra, often translated as "yogic sleep", is a guided practice of conscious deep rest. You lay down, get gloriously comfortable, close your eyes, and let a voice guide you into the liminal space between waking and sleeping. The body rests as deeply as it does in sleep, while a thread of awareness stays gently awake.

And here's the part I always love telling people: that's it. There are no poses to hold, no bendy shapes to make, no special kit to buy. If you can lay down and listen, you can practise Yoga Nidra. It is, quite honestly, the most accessible practice in all of yoga.

The Liminal Space

That threshold state, hovering between wakefulness and sleep, is where the magic happens. In yogic tradition it's been treasured for centuries as a doorway to deeper layers of ourselves. And now modern neuroscience is catching up, with researchers exploring how these practices (you may have heard the term NSDR, or Non-Sleep Deep Rest) can support the nervous system, calm the stress response, and help the mind soften its grip.

In this liminal space, the body is invited to shift out of "doing" mode, that familiar fight, flight, hold-it-all-together state, and into "being" mode, where rest, digestion, repair and healing can actually take place. For those of us living busy, full lives (a job, a family, a phone that never stops pinging), that shift isn't a luxury. It's a necessity.

What Happens in a Practice?

Every Yoga Nidra journey is a little different, but you'll often meet these companions along the way:

Settling in. Taking all the time you need to get warm and comfortable. This isn't the boring bit before the practice. It is the practice. Preparation is an act of self-care in itself.

Sankalpa. A heartfelt intention, planted like a seed in the fertile soil of deep rest. Not a resolution barked at yourself, but a quiet, positive statement of who you already are becoming.

Rotation of consciousness. A gentle journey of awareness around the body, part by part. It sounds simple, and it is, yet it draws the mind inward and settles the body beautifully.

Breath awareness. Nothing to change, nothing to force. Simply noticing the breath breathing itself.

Imagery. Perhaps water, light, the seasons, or the vastness of the night sky. The imagination becomes a pathway to stillness.

Returning. Slowly, kindly, coming back, often feeling as though you've had hours of rest in a fraction of the time.

You Can't Get It Wrong
This is the thing I want you to take away more than anything else. There is no such thing as being "bad" at Yoga Nidra. Fell asleep halfway through? Wonderful. Your body clearly needed it. Mind wandered off to the shopping list? Perfectly normal. You simply come back to the voice when you notice. Fidgeted, sniffled, got up to let the cat out? All welcome.

There is nothing to do, nowhere to go, and nothing to achieve. In a world that measures us constantly, that in itself is quietly radical.

Finding the Voice That Works for You
Because Yoga Nidra is a guided practice, the voice that leads you matters. It becomes your anchor, your companion in that liminal space. And just like anything else, what soothes one person may not suit another. Some of us melt into a soft, low voice; others prefer something brighter, or a particular accent, pace, or style of imagery. The good news is that there is a whole world of practices freely available, so you can explore until you find the voice that feels like home. Platforms such as YouTube and Insight Timer are wonderful places to begin, with thousands of Yoga Nidra and NSDR recordings of every length, from a ten-minute reset to a full, luxurious hour. Try a few different teachers. Notice how your body responds. Does the voice help you soften, or does something in you stay on guard?
Trust that response. There's no right answer here, only what works for you. When you find a voice that allows your nervous system to genuinely let go, you've found your practice. And on the days when nothing quite lands, that's fine too. Come back tomorrow and try another.

Why It Matters Now
We are, collectively, exhausted. Burnout, anxiety, poor sleep. These have become the background hum of modern life. Yoga Nidra offers a different frequency: a regular, reliable way to down-regulate the nervous system, to meet ourselves with kindness, and to remember that rest is not a reward we earn after the doing is done. Rest is the foundation the doing stands on.

Ten minutes on your lunch break. Twenty minutes before bed. Forty-five minutes on a Sunday afternoon under a blanket. However it fits into your life, it fits.

So here's my invitation to you: this week, choose one moment. Lay down. Get comfortable, warmer than you think you need. Press play on a guided practice. And allow yourself to be led into rest.

You don't need to believe anything. You don't need to be good at it. All you have to do is show up and try it for yourself.

Because rest isn't idleness. Rest is restoration. And once you've felt it for yourself, you'll understand why I say it with such confidence:

NIDRA WORKS.

In gratitude,
Kate x

One of my favourite reviews yet…. 😉

Yoga Nidra doesn’t need to be full of excess fluffiness.

It doesn’t need to be soft and dreamy to be effective- far from it!

This is a powerful practice which deserves to be treated as such!

I love the honesty in this review (on Insight Timer). And I’m grateful to have made it thru the practitioner’s quality control!!!

Find a voice that RESONATES. That allows you to tune in to your self. And let go to the superpower that is YOGA NIDRA!

New Practice available on YouTube and Insight Timer

This practice invites you to journey to wholeness, exploring the idea of individuation.... the becoming of who you already, deeply are.

Through guided relaxation, breath awareness, Sankalpa, rotation of consciousness, opposites, visualisation, and spaces of silence, you’ll be invited to turn inward and reconnect with the self beneath expectations, roles, and the stories you have been told about who you should be.

Individuation is not about becoming perfect. It is about becoming more fully yourself - integrating the bright, shadowed, strong, tender, proud, and hidden aspects of who you are. The whole of you.

Hope you enjoy.
