What a lovely way to end the week.

I had the pleasure of speaking at the Merriman Grange networking event this morning about communicating with confidence, personality and impact.

I shared my journey as a stand-up comedian, including some of the highs, lows and lessons along the way.

One of my biggest tips was to use humour in your business communications and when you speak. It’s a brilliant way to connect with your audience and make yourself more memorable and relatable.

The idea that using humour in business somehow reduces your professional gravitas is nonsense. It’s a myth.

Whether you’re introducing yourself at a networking event, pitching to a client, leading a meeting or standing up to present, your personality isn’t something to hide. It’s often the thing people remember most.

We’ve also got some brilliant local events coming up, including a public speaking and stand-up comedy taster session, plus a new monthly Speakeasy networking event for women. You’ll find them all on Eventbrite.

If you're looking for a speaker who'll bring a bit of humour, energy and practical advice to your next event, let's have a chat.

😄 Proof your team-building day can actually be fun.

This team showed up…
And within minutes:

Dave from Finance was delivering like a keynote speaker
Sarah from HR was getting laughs
And the whole room realised presenting isn’t nearly as scary as they thought

🎤 No awkward icebreakers.
No corporate clichés.
No one banging on about “projecting your voice” like it’s 1987.

Just practical, confidence-building communication skills your team will actually use… delivered in a way people genuinely enjoy.

That’s the difference.

💬 With 85+ recommendations, our clients don’t just attend these sessions… they feel the impact long after.

Because this isn’t just about presenting.

It’s about:

Who can afford to be a speaker these days?

I’m seeing more “pay to play” opportunities creeping into the speaking world… and I’m struggling with it.

There’s a commonly cited insight from communication coach Carmine Gallo (author of Talk Like TED) that great talks can take around 20 hours of preparation for every minute of delivery.

So a 20-minute talk? That’s roughly 400 hours of work behind the scenes.

And now… speakers are being asked to pay to deliver it?

I’m always telling my clients: ‘Charge what you’re worth.’

They invest in coaching. They spend hours crafting strong, engaging content.

They rehearse so they can deliver with confidence and impact.

And then they’re asked to pay to share their expertise?

That doesn’t sit right. Because when you factor in travel, accommodation, and time away from the business, speaking can already be a significant investment.

I understand events are expensive to run. I really do.

But this trend feels disheartening.

I first saw it creep into the comedy circuit years ago. It caused a lot of frustration then… and I’m surprised to see it appearing more in the speaking space now.

It also raises a bigger question. Who can actually afford to speak in this model?

Because it stops being about ideas and expertise…and starts being about who can afford the entry fee.

Is it just me? Or are other speakers feeling this too?

What a cracking testimonial. Thanks Rachael 🙌

Rachael attended the Pitch and Present Masterclass and shared this brilliant feedback.

These sessions are small, practical and very hands-on. People don’t just sit and listen. They practise, get feedback, and leave with techniques they can use straight away in meetings, pitches and presentations.

My background in stand-up comedy also means we cover how to manage a room, control nerves and use your voice with real impact 🎤
We also have lunch and plenty of laughs 😄

Next session: Friday 27 March
Chimney House, Brighton 📍

If you’re keen to change how you feel about speaking up, presenting and networking to raise your profile and win new business, the booking link is in the comments.

This caricature made me laugh far more than it should have.

Somewhere between the giant grin, Brighton Pier glowing in the background and the slightly chaotic energy… it’s not completely inaccurate.

As most of you know, I run Speakeasy Coaching and Brighton Comedy Course.

Which means I spend my days helping people:

• speak with more confidence
• structure their ideas properly
• lead rooms without shrinking
• use humour to connect
• and realise they’re braver, and often funnier, than they thought

Sometimes that’s a corporate leadership team.
Sometimes it’s someone preparing for a huge pitch.
Sometimes it’s a nervous first-timer stepping onto a comedy stage.

Different rooms. Same foundations.

I now have 80+ recommendations on LinkedIn, which still feels slightly surreal and something I’m incredibly grateful for.

If you ever hear of a company looking for communication training, leadership development, presentation coaching, keynote speaking or comedy confidence workshops, please do keep me in mind.

It’s what I do, and I love it.
There's a Pitch and Present masterclass on the 27th of March.
and a beginners comedy course starting 10th March.
