Wild biome day 4…. It was all about the rose hips today, collecting and processing, then creating a delicious rose-hip passata and drying the seeds for flour…
I used some of the passata for a fabulous venison bolognaise, flavoured with ground elder, Scot’s lovage, fermented wild garlic and hogweed, served with sea spaghetti and honey fermented baby pine cones…
🍀
I’ve felt like a different person today, the headache has buggered off, mental clarity is back ( hello, I MISSED you! ) and I’ve felt lighter and brighter! It’s like my body suddenly remembered that it loves this regime, that it thrives on wild food… I love it!
🍀
It also suddenly occurred to me that this is HARD, this thing that we are doing, its hard work, no matter how much you prepare, to get two meals on the table every day that are totally wild and foraged!
🍀
So a big well bloody done to everyone involved… to the second and third timers who came back for another go, and to all the newbies who might be thinking ‘what the hell?’.. YOURE all amazing, we got this! Keep going, it really does get easier and the sense of achievement and learning curve are incredible!! 🥰🌿🍄🍄‍🟫🍀☺️

Wild biome day 3… keeping it real!
I’ve really struggled today … not with a lack of food, but a lack of enthusiasm! 😆🤔
So chestnut and fig leaf pancakes with plum and wild raspberry compote… topped with chonky blackberries and elderflower honey..
Tomorrow I will do much better! 😆🌿🍀🍄‍🟫🍄

Wild Biome Day 2… the headache has finally abated after drinking buckets of ivan chai and water all day. I still feel incredibly old and tired!
🌿
I was trading at a street food event, selling chocolate brownies in the pouring rain with the smell of fast food all around me for 6 hours… total hell!
I was so desperate to get home and had nowt prepared so this was a ‘chuck it all in’ emergency meal…
🌿
Venison mince cooked in venison bone broth, flavoured with lacto fermented Jack by the Hedge, dried wild garlic, porcini, dried oysters, wild garlic salt, alexanders… topped with prunes, ground elder, goosegog gubbins and toasted hazelnuts…
🌿
Fridge to table in 20 minutes, loved every scrap!

My final supper before I embark on the …
🌿
It was time for a decadent feast before all the familiar foods disappear for a month.
☺️
The Wild Biome is a citizen science project, where participants live solely on wild food in order to record the effects on the gut biome, hair, nails and various other markers…
I’ll tell you more about it over the next few weeks but for now…
…my favourite Thai green curry made with homemade paneer, made with all the fridge rubble… mushroom soy charred shallots, candied figs, coconut rice homemade smoky salsa matcha and pickled wild garlic flowers…
Bloody phenomenal
Wish me luck, I’m gonna miss all this so much!! 😆

Every August we make the pilgrimage to Scotland for the wilderness, the forests, the mountains and lochs, the stunning shore, the rum and raisin ice cream … and of course, the mushrooms!
🍄‍🟫 🍄
This year, it’s taken on extra significance because in September I will be embarking on the Wild Biome Project again for a month eeeek!
A bit scary… nothing but wild food… no dairy, no booze, no chocolate or earl grey … all the things which tend to loom a wee bit too large in my life! but I’m ready for it. I NEED it!
🍄‍🟫🍄
So I’m in Scotland for a few days… old haunts, favourite places, retreading familiar paths. It’s beautiful… it’s green here, it takes my breath away time and again. And I’m stocking up on mushrooms …
🍄‍🟫🍄
In the space of a few hours I’ve come face to face with beautiful deer, a majestic hare and the incredible sight of more than fifty red kites filling the sky.
I’ve spent glorious hours picking golden chanterelles to a backdrop of birdsong and rushing water … and had a standoff with a crazy woman in an Aldi car park… 😂
Rough with the smooth eh? How was your day?

My darling Red has left home and gone to live in this hollow tree in the woods!
I’m so sad… he has always been the most loving boy since we took him in as a feral kitten.
Not the adventurous type, but happy to watch snow falling from the radiator top beside the window, curl up on a fleecy blanket at the bottom of my bed, or wind himself into my lap hooking his paws over my arm, nose in my palm whenever possible.
I’m hoping it’s just a moment, that it’s possibly because my neighbours dogs have rattled him … and that he will suddenly start to miss the cuddles and belly rubs he loves so much. Until then I’ll keep visiting and reminding him that he’s very much loved!
Keep your fingers crossed for me!
