A two-minute check: does your child understand algebra, or just remember the steps?

Ask them to solve:
5x − 7 = 2x + 8

Then ask:
"Why do you subtract 2x from both sides?"
"How can you check your answer?"

The answer is x = 5. Substituting it back gives 18 on both sides.

Explaining the method can reveal more than getting one answer right. This is a starting check, not a complete assessment of their algebra skills.

England parents of Year 6 children: have you applied for a secondary school place?

For September 2027 entry, the usual deadline is 31 October 2026. Apply through your home local council and check its website for the exact date and process. Some schools also ask for a supplementary form.

Applying for a school place and registering for a grammar-school entrance test are separate steps. Selection arrangements vary by area.

It is also a good time to check whether your child is secure in Maths and English before Year 7.

Can your child explain a Science answer, or only remember the fact?

Try asking: "Why does a solid keep its shape?"

"Because it is solid" repeats the question. A stronger explanation uses the particle model: strong forces hold the particles in fixed positions, so they vibrate but cannot move past one another.

Ask your child: "Have you explained why?"

Exact marks depend on the question and its mark scheme, but this check can reveal whether they understand the idea behind the answer.
