Helen Garrett Painting fulfills an urge, a striving to converse with the mysteries that lie within and outside of us.

It
is a place in which I attempt to describe the indescribable. Imagery appears as direct, fluid and honest in its clarity and in its contradict

The process of painting is so mysterious. Time is forgotten. One becomes part of an eternal moving system. Images seem to visit or fall away. It is like seeing the surface of a moment.

These are some images forming that will change.

In November this year I will have my first Solo Exhibition in many years 'Primordial Dance' The work will be accompanied by the extraordinary Poetry of Kate Innes. This will be in the Allsop Gallery, Bridport Art Centre and continue until Christmas.

Holding loved ones in my heart today. Those present in daily life, those felt and loved through veils of loss and those unknown souls I am yet to meet along the way.

Time it seems, moves through us - yet we carry the images and significance of our experience and feel our unique truth inside the body.

Courage always, to walk the path. Trust that deep knowledge within your own heart.

Visiting ancient sites this year and being with artefacts - some made thousands of years ago, is strangely comforting for me. To notice the beauty of a line or joy in a stroke of paint never loses its excitement. The votive offerings are so mysterious as we make forms out of our very human hopes, despairs or spilling over of love - always extending beyond our bodies.

As the song of a bird expresses its nature, what is our society’s song right now and is our ‘culture’ really expressing the song that is our hearts?

I think most people feel estranged, disenchanted, and separate and this is causing great suffering -psychologically and our physical health can then sadly express that dis-ease.

Using Art as a vehicle in teaching I find myself trying to create a space for direct experience, which feels like a catalyst for direct conversation. The dialogues springing up reveal mostly nobility and a desire for co-operation and kindness in the human being. A special kind of connection occurs within the group - which may be described better as ‘communion’ a place where words fall away.

I am interested in our relationship to material, how we have always expressed ideas and beliefs through carving, painting, pattern, forming, music, dance... I return to cave art, Minoan art from Crete and ancient cultures that may have practised nature worship and recognised a divine feminine aspect

Creativity is inherent in human nature. What is the urge to express...are we trying to understand our experience of existence... ? I am enjoying the directness of ice age art, animal depictions on cave walls, clay figurines, votive offerings.

Working on a new collection of paintings in the studio. I am enchanted by Minoan Art, by archeology, by the presence and layers of life. Gradually the images emerge.

It feels like a privilege to teach our weekly art session at the 'Quiet Space' in Poundbury. Such a lovely group. This week we were exploring relationship - the relationship of living systems around us (co-existence) by drawing in the garden... and then, how art can play out those relationships - the brush as an extension of our own body as it touches the paper, the ink and its movement through the water. We notice the many choices present as we try to create an image.

We have some spaces free as we continue into September. Please get in touch if you are interested:

Landscapes of light - Four Week Course - Lyme Regis Museum

Lyme Regis has attracted well-known artists and writers for centuries; from JR Tolkien to Jane Austen, John Fowles to Tracy Chevalier as well as inspirational painters like Turner and Whistler among many others. Our course will draw from many aspects of the immediate landscape as we work inside the Mary Anning Wing amidst tempestuous weather patterns and endlessly changing skies, surrounded by the ocean.

Bringing our attention to the intricate patterns and rhythms of the natural world can strengthen our sense of connection and belonging. Rooted in the geology and landscape of this unique place we work in a reflective and experimental way using a range of materials and techniques.

Wow! Course is full!

Looking forward to continuing this week...
