✂️ Hairdresser wanted at Renew Education

We’re looking for a casual hairdresser to join the Renew team and help deliver practical hairdressing sessions with some of our young people in Bridgwater.

For us, this is about much more than learning a new skill. It’s about giving young people the chance to build confidence, try something practical, develop life and employability skills, and experience success in a different kind of learning environment.

We’re ideally looking for someone who is:

* An experienced hairdresser
* Great with young people
* Patient, positive and able to build strong relationships
* Available on Mondays where possible
* Happy working flexibly as part of our wider team

Experience in education isn’t essential — the right person and the right approach matter most.

👋 Meet Abi Willis, our Assistant Manager and Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead at Renew Education.

Abi brings extensive experience in safeguarding, pastoral care and family support, alongside a compassionate, relationship-centred approach. She believes that strong, trusting relationships help children and young people build confidence, engage with learning and thrive.

Having supported young people through mental health challenges and complex family circumstances, Abi understands that every child’s needs are unique. She works closely with families and other professionals to keep each young person’s wellbeing at the heart of every decision.

Abi is passionate about making Renew Education a safe, nurturing and welcoming place where every young person feels valued and supported to flourish. 💚

A short story in six photos…

A few blue barrels, some rope, wooden poles and a challenge:

Build a raft. Then trust it enough to take it onto the lake.

There was plenty of problem-solving along the way. Knots to work out, ideas to test, changes to make and, most importantly, teamwork to get it finished.

Then came the best bit — seeing something they had built themselves actually work.

From the first knot to paddling across the lake. 💙

This is exactly why we value experiences like this at Renew. Learning doesn’t always need to happen behind a desk. Sometimes confidence, resilience and communication are built by getting stuck in and seeing what you’re capable of.

Jess Stephens - Teacher and Mentor

I have nine years’ experience working in education supporting children and young people. I spent Four years of this working in specialist provision supporting students with SEND and SEMH needs. This experience has given me a strong understanding of the different challenges young people can face and how important it is to provide the right support in a way that works for each individual.

I believe in meeting young people where they are, helping them feel safe, respected and understood, and supporting them to reconnect with learning at a pace that feels right for them. Building positive, trusting relationships is at the heart of my approach.

I’m also a parent of two children, one of whom has AuDHD. This has given me an even deeper personal understanding of some of the challenges children and families can experience, and has strengthened my passion for helping young people feel supported and valued.

Outside of work I enjoy gaming, listening to music, reading and relaxing at home with my cats and family.

From an idea on paper to a bridge holding seven cars! 🌉🚗

This week, we took on a brilliant design and engineering challenge: creating his own version of Tower Bridge.

One of our young people started by designing and planning his bridge before choosing his materials and building it using cardboard, foil and masking tape.

Then came the important bit — testing it.

Initially he tested the bridge with one toy car… and discovered his design was strong enough to support seven!

A simple activity bringing together science, design, problem-solving, creativity and resilience — with plenty of practical learning along the way.

At Renew, we want learning to feel purposeful, engaging and connected to the real world. This was a brilliant example of exactly that. 👏

💚 **Meet Rhys Monroe—Teacher and Mentor at Renew Education**

Rhys brings **over five years’ experience supporting children and young people**, including those who have found education difficult or faced challenges in their personal lives.

His understanding is personal too. Having spent time in alternative provision and pupil referral units during his own education, Rhys understands how it can feel to struggle at school and feel unheard.

That experience shapes his approach: **listening without judgement, building trusting relationships and helping young people see possibilities for their future.**

Professionally, Rhys has supported young people around exploitation, substance misuse, emotional wellbeing, relationships and personal development. He has also completed training in safeguarding, exploitation, counselling and supporting young people with complex needs.

Through Renew’s targeted mentoring offer, sessions can focus on:

🌱 Confidence and self-belief
🤝 Healthy relationships and boundaries
🧭 Recognising grooming, pressure and manipulation
💬 Seeking support and identifying trusted adults
✨ Future aspirations and positive next steps

**Available to schools and education settings:**

• £250 for a total of two hours’ provision each week
• Booked over a half term
• Individual appointments or small groups of up to five
• Focus and format agreed around pupils’ needs

This support works alongside your setting’s existing pastoral and safeguarding arrangements.

📣 **Bridgwater businesses—could you help make this October half term special for local young people?**

At Renew Education, we’re planning three days of supported holiday activities from **26–28 October**, for up to **20 children and young people each day**.

We want to give them opportunities to try new experiences, build friendships and confidence—and enjoy themselves in a safe, welcoming environment.

**We’re looking for local businesses to help make it happen.**

Your contribution could help cover activities, entry fees, transport, food and the staffing needed to support our young people.

💚 **Renew will match financial contributions towards activity costs pound for pound.** A £300 contribution from your business would become £600 towards activities with our support.

Contributions of any size are welcome. If you run a local venue or could offer an activity, we’d love to hear from you too.

We’ll share an update afterwards so you can see what your support helped provide.

Every parent’s favourite thing to find squashed into a carpet… 😅

This week at Renew, our young people have been making their own squishies!

From cutting and shaping the foam to painting, designing and finishing their creations, there was plenty going on behind the scenes — creativity, concentration, fine motor skills, planning and, importantly, a lot of enjoyment.

Sometimes the best learning starts with something a young person is genuinely interested in.

The finished products are looking pretty impressive too… although we can’t promise parents will thank us when they come home! 😂
