📱 Guidance on Screen Time for Under 5s 📱
As technology increasingly becomes part of our daily routines, it's essential to help our little ones develop healthy screen habits right from the start.
The government’s latest Best Start in Life guidance suggests:
👶 For children under 2 years • Try to avoid screen time wherever possible, except for shared moments like video calls with family or looking at pictures together.
🧒 For children aged 2 to 5 years • Aim for a maximum of 1 hour of screen time each day, and ideally less if you can.
✅ Select quality content • Choose slow-paced, age-appropriate shows designed for young children. • Steer clear of fast-paced social media videos and content aimed at older audiences. • Use parental controls to ensure a safer online experience for children.
👨👩👧 Watch together • Children learn best when accompanied by adults. Watching, discussing, and enjoying content as a family can enhance language skills and understanding.
🏡 Create screen-free times and spaces • Keep mealtime and bedtime screens away. • Try to avoid having screens on during playtime or family interactions.
🧠 Why is this important? • 90% of brain development occurs before age 5. • Young ones learn best through play, conversation, reading, exploring, and engaging with adults. • Excessive screen time may impact sleep, language skills, social abilities, physical activity, and overall wellbeing.
📚 Fantastic alternatives include reading stories together, outdoor play, simple games, colouring, singing songs, and chatting during daily routines.
Let's join hands to foster healthy development and positive screen habits for our little learners. 💙
