““Having the BFI Film Academy on my personal statement greatly contributed to my unconditional offer from my university. This was what stood out to the Media Course that I am currently enrolled on.” - Lily

🎬 Thinking about a future in the screen industries?
Apply for our next BFI Film Academy South West Introductory Course by 11th October 2026: www.somersetfilm.com/bfifilmacademysouthwest

Here's Lily's Story:
"I have done multiple Somerset Film events over the last few years, and they have greatly helped me gain experience in the film industry.

The BFI Academy Film Academy has allowed me to meet loads of new people with a similar passion for film, some of whom I am still friends with to this day.

Additionally, having the BFI Academy Film Academy on my personal statement greatly contributed to my unconditional offer from my university. This was what stood out to the Media Course that I am currently enrolled on.

I’ve also been lucky enough to be a part of the Brick by Brick short film produced by Somerset Film. I got my position on set via my connections with Somerset Film and the BFI Film Academy, who I am very grateful to have given me my first paid position on a film set.

Currently, I am completing my final year at Coventry University, and I will soon have a week of work experience at Envy Post Production in London. Again, my previous experiences at the BFI Academy Film Academy definitely helped me get this opportunity."

This week, our Creative Director, Deb, had the chance to meet A Level Media students at West Somerset College and talk about the huge range of career opportunities across the creative industries, particularly in film and digital media. 🎬

Deb encouraged the students to think beyond school subjects and consider what they’re good at, what they enjoy doing, and the skills they develop through their interests and hobbies — all of which can help shape future career choices.

And, of course, no conversation about careers in film would be complete without talking about films! Deb asked the students to recommend something she should watch next.

Here are their suggestions… 👀🍿 What would you recommend?

Congratulations to Annie Farley, whose film The Man Who Mends Things has picked up another festival award! 🎬🏆

Last week Annie received the trophy and laurels for Best Overall Short Film, awarded by the Between the Blue and Green Film Festival in Worthing. Thanks to Nicola and the team for organising a great event.

It’s fantastic to see Annie’s work continuing to receive recognition on the festival circuit. The film was made during the Artist in Residence opportunity we offer annually, supported by Arts Council England. Sign up for our e-newsletter to hear about next year's residency via our website.
