We had a fantastic day delivering the Valero Oil Refinery Bolting Standard training (based on ASME PCC-1 2022) to our latest cohort from Altrad. We had a 50:50 split of experienced personnel and young employees that are relatively new to industry and the refinery at Pembroke.

A blend of classroom-based theory, workshop demonstrations, and hands-on practical learning ensured that everyone left our training centre with the knowledge, confidence and practical skill required to achieve safe and compliant bolted joint integrity every time.

While positive feedback is always a huge win for our team, one particular comment on today’s evaluation forms stood out:

“Hands down, the best course I have been on. Really enjoyed."

Comments like this make all the hard work behind the scenes worth it.

Delivering rigorous, industry-leading standards is vital, but making the material engaging, practical, and truly valuable for the team on the ground is always our ultimate goal.

A huge thank you to the team at Altrad for their engagement, great questions, plenty of laughs and hard work today.

Tailored specifically for those inspecting bolted fl**ge joint assemblies in high-hazard process industries, this comprehensive training meets the highest industry standards.

The course is fully aligned with:
✅ ASME PCC-1-2022 (Guidelines for Pressure Boundary Bolted Fl**ge Joint Assembly) Appendix A
✅ The latest Energy Institute Guidelines for management of integrity of bolted joints in pressurised systems.

Key Curriculum Highlights include (but not limited to):
🔵 Fundamental principles of bolted fl**ge joint assemblies
🔵 Industry standards/references
🔵 Identification of fl**ge, gasket, and bolting types etc.
🔵 Fl**ge face inspection techniques (ASME PCC-1, Appendix A)
🔵 Inspection - failure factors
🔵 Critical safety procedures and industry best practices
🔵 The role and importance of independent inspection/core personal attributes
🔵 Essential QA/QC documentation
🔵 Specialist inspection methods for PTFE lined piping and hydrofluoric acid alkylation facilities
🔵 Written theory test and practical 'fault finding' assessment

In addition to technical reference documents, every participant receives an exclusive ZULU inspection toolkit packed with essential field gear, including our best-selling Joint Integrity Handbook, a vernier caliper, fl**ge gap tool, intrinsically safe torch, branded notebook/pens, and an inspection mirror etc.

➡️ ATTENDANCE PRE-REQUISITES ⬅️
This course sits at the higher‑competency end of the mechanical joint integrity spectrum, so the prerequisites need to ensure that delegates arrive with enough technical grounding to meaningfully assess, verify, and challenge fl**ge work—not just observe it.

We are a business founded in Wales over 16 years ago with a clear purpose: raise global standards for mechanical joint integrity and help process industries operate more safely, more reliably, and more responsibly.

That purpose and vision has taken us from Aberafan to Abu Dhabi, Margam to Malaysia, Hirwaun to Hong Kong and Caerdydd to California, and far beyond...

But our identity hasn’t changed. Our roots are Welsh. Our reach is global. Our commitment is universal.

Rydym yn falch o gynrychioli Cymru - We're proud to represent Wales on the world stage and proud of the clients who trust us to deliver.

This year, our Bolted Fl**ge Joint Inspectors Course has evolved from a complimentary lunch‑and‑learn session into a fully developed, competency‑based training programme incorporating both theory tests and practical assessments.

Built around the detailed requirements of ASME PCC‑1:2022 and supported by key UK industry guidance—including publications from The Energy Institute—the course is designed for personnel responsible for the rigorous scrutiny of bolted fl**ge joints within high‑hazard process industries.

It is particularly suited to inspection activities during new‑build projects, maintenance turnarounds, and other critical operational phases.

Participants gain the capability to recognise early indicators of joint failure, assess fl**ge alignment and surface condition, evaluate bolt‑loading practices, and determine when a joint falls outside acceptable tolerances. Beyond technical inspection skills, the course reinforces the importance of traceability, compliance, and consistent documentation, ensuring inspectors understand their role within wider assurance and governance frameworks.

The result is a training programme that aligns seamlessly with established industry expectations and strengthens the competence of Fl**ge Inspectors and QA/QC professionals across all sectors where bolted joint integrity is mission‑critical.

Our August courses are now fully subscribed. If you would like to review the learner pre‑requisites, course fees, and upcoming availability for Q4 2026 and early 2027, please contact;

“Value the hard hat as much as the graduation cap.”

It’s a strong statement from our new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham — and one that resonates deeply with us at Zulu Joint Integrity & Training Ltd.

Two very different routes, yet of equal importance to UK industry and our economy. Sadly for many years, only one career path has been culturally celebrated.

For over three decades, the UK has allowed practical mechanical engineering capability to decline. Although there have been various efforts made over the past few years, apprenticeships have been undervalued, technical colleges underfunded, and industry left to bridge the widening skills gap alone. Meanwhile, the demand for competent, hands-on engineers has never been higher.

We train apprentices, college students and university learners across very different pathways. The talent is there. The ambition is there. What’s been missing is national commitment.

We’ve heard similar vows from both sides of the political aisle before. What matters now is delivery — real investment, real reform, and real parity between academic and technical routes.

If this pledge becomes action, it could mark a turning point for industry in Wales and across the UK.

We sincerely hope it does....

Human Performance Training: A Critical Foundation for the UK’s Nuclear Future

In the nuclear industry, human performance isn’t optional — it’s fundamental. From operators on the ground to contractor companies delivering complex packages of work, the behaviours people bring to site directly shape safety, reliability, and project success.

That’s why our ECITB HuP01 Human Performance Training is becoming a core expectation across the sector. It equips teams with the structured behaviours needed to reduce error, strengthen communication, and maintain discipline in high‑risk environments.

For mega‑projects like Hinkley Point C, where thousands of people interface daily, consistent human‑performance standards mean:

✅ Reduced human error — practical tools that stop small mistakes becoming major events
✅ Improved contractor alignment — shared expectations across multiple organisations and supply chains
✅ Stronger safety culture — proactive behaviours that identify and challenge risk early
✅ More predictable project delivery — clearer communication, fewer delays, and better operational discipline

Our ECITB approved trainers can deliver this course at our training centres at Bridgend, South Wales and Chesterfield or at your premises.

It's perfectly placed for those working in industry who want to understand the importance of human performance in safety and business effectiveness, including;

➡️ Supervisors and Managers: To help them manage performance and engage with their teams more effectively.
➡️ Safety Officers: To enhance their knowledge of human performance models and error prevention tools.
➡️ Project Engineers: To apply human performance principles in their projects for better outcomes.
➡️ Team Leaders: To improve communication and reduce errors within their teams.

The goal is simple: build the behaviours that protect people, safeguard assets, and support the successful delivery of the UK’s next generation of nuclear infrastructure.

Human performance isn’t just training — it’s a strategic investment in nuclear resilience.
