EESW / STEM Cymru

EESW / STEM Cymru The Engineering Education Scheme Wales (EESW) is a non-profit, educational charity which has been in existence since 1989.

In July 2010, EESW received funding from the European Social Fund to develop and maintain the STEM Cymru project within convergence areas of Wales. The STEM Cymru project will encompass The Engineering Education Scheme in Wales, Go4SET, Headstart Cymru, The Year in Industry, F1 Challenge, and the Colegau Cymru Engineering Week.

As schools enjoy the summer break, we’re looking back at one of our final workshop days of the term with Cara, our STEM Education Officer.

From carefully packing the equipment and transforming school spaces into hands-on learning environments, to supporting pupils as they design, build, test and race their creations, there’s plenty that goes into a day of STEM workshop delivery.

At Ysgol Friars, pupils explored renewable energy by building and testing working wind turbines before becoming motorsport engineers for our Speed Challenge workshop, designing their own Formula 1-inspired cars and putting them to the test on the track.

🤖✨ A brand new adventure in STEM has begun!

This week our Sphero Indi robots rolled into action for the very first time as part of our workshops delivered through the Food and Fun programme! 🎉

There were smiles, laughter and plenty of problem-solving as pupils explored coding concepts by guiding the colourful robots through a series of fun challenges. It's a fantastic way to introduce younger learners to computational thinking, robotics and engineering without needing a screen!

This is just the beginning! We're already busy developing new in-school workshops that will use the Sphero Indi robots to introduce younger learners to coding, robotics and engineering through engaging, hands-on challenges.

📢 A brand-new STEM adventure is coming to primary schools across Wales! 🏰🤖

From 1 September, schools will be able to register for Ddoe, Heddiw, Yfory – an exciting new FREE programme from EESW STEM Cymru that brings together Welsh history, engineering, creativity and robotics.

Pupils will:
🔹 Discover how engineering has shaped Wales from the past to the present.
🔹 Take on hands-on STEM design and engineering challenges.
🔹 Build coding and problem-solving skills through an exciting robotics challenge.
🔹 Explore how today's young people could help shape the Wales of tomorrow.

Designed to inspire curiosity, teamwork and creativity, Ddoe, Heddiw, Yfory helps pupils see STEM not as something that only happens in textbooks, but as a vital part of Welsh communities, industry and everyday life.

📅 Registration opens on 1 September. Places are expected to be popular, so keep an eye on our social media channels and be ready to secure your school's place!

As the school year comes to an end, we’d like to say a huge diolch to all the teachers, school staff and young people we’ve had the pleasure of working with this year.

It has been amazing to see so many young people building their confidence, developing new skills and discovering the opportunities available through STEM.

We hope you all enjoy a happy and well-earned summer break. We’re already looking forward to another exciting year ahead! ☀️

Over 400 torches in just a few weeks!
Pupils at Bryntirion School were the last group to join the Colour Coders programme before the summer break. They learnt how LED's work before using their torches to create a rainbow of colours.

The programme continues from September and thanks to funding from CSconnected, it's free to secondary schools in the Cardiff Capital Region until the end of November.

Inspiring the next generation of green innovators.

We’re delighted to have received £25,672.83 from the Pen y Cymoedd Wind Farm Community Fund CIC to support our new project, Turbine Time - Wind Powered Education.

The programme will engage around 720 young people across schools in Neath Port Talbot and Rhondda Cynon Taf, giving them the opportunity to take part in hands-on renewable energy investigations linked directly to the Pen y Cymoedd wind farm.

From building model turbines to exploring real careers in engineering, sustainability and renewable energy, the project will help young people see the opportunities available within the growing green economy right on their doorstep.

A huge thank you to the Pen y Cymoedd Community Fund for supporting this work. 💚

We had a brilliant day with Year 5 & 6 at getting our Bots ready for the Ddoe, Heddiw, Yfory project 🤖

**Ddoe, Heddiw, Yfory (Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow)** is an exciting STEM programme that blends a research and design challenge exploring inspiring examples of STEM from Wales’ history with a hands-on robotics and coding challenge.

The pupils brought fantastic energy to the day 💡—showing brilliant enthusiasm, problem-solving and teamwork as they took on the challenges and put their Bots through their paces.

They absolutely impressed us and definitely earned their Bot Driving Licences 🪪🏁!

What an amazing three days of hands-on STEM workshops as part of your Big Bang event, supported by EngineeringUK!

Your students explored the fascinating world of semiconductors and colour mixing with LEDs 💡, built and coded working prosthetic arms using sensors and motors 🤖, and put their engineering skills to the test by designing, assembling and racing F1-style model cars powered by compressed CO₂! 🏁

It was fantastic to see so much enthusiasm, teamwork, creativity and determination throughout every challenge. From solving problems together to communicating ideas and thinking like real engineers, you demonstrated the skills that will help shape the next generation of innovators.
