Yes children need boundaries but they are allowed to be upset by it. When they get upset we don't need to give in and we don't have to shut down their emotions either. Once again it is a way to coach them through.

"I know it is hard to turn off the tv. I like watching it too, and it is time for....... do you want to turn it off or would you like me to help you?" "I can give you a hug if you need to"

Having an emotional reaction to a boundary isn't something to be concerned about. It is an opportunity to help your child navigate their emotions

If children are anxious or overwhelmed, questions can trigger them. Give them space to talk but you don’t need to fix anything or know everything. Just letting them know that you care and allowing them to start the conversation might be what they need.

The more you can validate what they’re feeling (‘Today was big for you wasn’t it’) and give them space to feel, the more they will feel comfortable to talk.
