This Learning Disability Week, we're celebrating the strengths, talents, and unique contributions of people with learning disabilities.

This year's theme, "Do You See Me?", reminds us of the importance of creating communities where everyone is seen, heard, included, and valued.

🌟 4 Useful Tips for Reinforcement 🌟

Effective reinforcement isn't just about giving rewards-it's about increasing the likelihood of positive behaviour happening again. Small changes in how we provide reinforcement can make a lasting difference.

✅ Be Immediate – Reinforce the desired behaviour as soon as possible.
✅ Be Specific – Clearly tell the person what they did well.
✅ Find What Motivates Them – Different people are motivated by different things at different times.
✅ Check It's Actually Reinforcing – Just because someone likes something doesn't automatically make it a reinforcer. A true reinforcer increases the likelihood of the behaviour occurring again in the future.

Whether you're a teacher, support worker, parent, or practitioner, these simple strategies can help make reinforcement more effective and meaningful.

🚫 MYTH: ABA is harmful and aims to "cure" autism.

✅ FACT: Modern, ethical ABA does not seek to cure autism. Autism is a neurodevelopmental difference, not an illness that needs to be cured.
The goal of ABA is to support individuals in developing skills that are meaningful to them, increase independence, improve quality of life, and reduce barriers that may impact their ability to participate in daily activities.

Quality ABA should be:
✨ Person-centred
✨ Respectful of individual preferences
✨ Focused on meaningful goals
✨ Collaborative with families and individuals
✨ Guided by ethics and evidence-based practice

Like any profession, practices have evolved over time. Today's ABA emphasizes dignity, assent, choice, and individualized support.

🔹 Peer Supervision for Behaviour Analysts (UK-SBA requirement - 12 hours per year) 🔹

Following updated guidance, a minimum of 12 hours of supervision per year is now required for continuing practice. I’m exploring interest in setting up a peer supervision group for Behaviour Analysts, aligned with UK Society for Behaviour Analysis (UK-SBA) expectations.

Important clarification on accrued hours:
✅ Where peer supervision hours are to be counted/accrued, both parties must be qualified to a peer-level standard

Who this group is for:
✔️ Behaviour Analysts (e.g. UKBA Cert, BCBA / BCaBA where appropriate)
✔️ Practitioners working in education, health, social care, or independent practice
✔️ Those seeking an ethical, reflective, and compliant peer supervision space

What I’m proposing:
🧠 Peer supervision (offer & swap) that may contribute toward the 12-hour annual requirement
📍 In-person (Thanet & surrounding areas) and/or 💻 Zoom
🔒 Confidential, respectful, psychologically safe environment
📈 Focus on ethical decision-making, case discussion, professional development, and reflective practice
⏱️ Structure and frequency shaped collaboratively

This is intended as a complementary peer model (not a replacement for other required supervision), supporting both professional development and compliance.
