Farm sensory play all set up
Communication and language: Encourages children to name the animals, make animal sounds and talk about what they are doing. You can introduce words such as farm, field, pond, stable, tractor, sheep, lamb, cow and calf.
Understanding the world: Helps children learn about farm animals, where they live, what they eat and how they are cared for. They can begin to understand that different animals need different environments.
Fine motor development: Picking up the small animals, moving them between areas, driving the tractor and manipulating the different materials strengthens fingers and improves hand-eye coordination.
Sensory development: The different textures of the oats/cereal, coloured rice and water provide lots of tactile exploration and opportunities to compare rough, smooth, wet, dry, soft and crunchy.
Imaginative play: Children can create their own little farm stories—feeding the animals, putting them to bed, taking them to the pond or moving them around in the tractor.
Early maths: They can count the animals, sort them into groups, match adults and babies, compare which group has more/fewer and use positional language such as inside, outside, next to, behind and in front.
Personal and social development: If several children play together, they practise sharing the animals and equipment, taking turns, cooperating and developing their own ideas alongside their friends.
Problem solving: Deciding where animals belong and how to move them around the farm encourages independent thinking and decision-making.
