⚓ CARDINAL MARKS MADE EASY ⚓
Cardinal Marks show the safest water around a danger by using the direction of the compass — North, East, South, and West. Mariners must pass on the named side of the mark to stay safe from underwater hazards like rocks, wrecks, or shallow water.
🧭 EASY CLOCK TRICK TO REMEMBER: ➡ East = 3 O’Clock
⬇ South = 6 O’Clock
⬅ West = 9 O’Clock
Count the flashes and match them with the clock position!
🔹 North Cardinal
Safe water is to the NORTH of the mark
Light: Continuous Quick or Very Quick flashes
🔹 East Cardinal
Safe water is to the EAST of the mark
Light: 3 flashes
🔹 South Cardinal
Safe water is to the SOUTH of the mark
Light: 6 flashes + 1 long flash
