Please write to your MP about how British Sign Language (BSL) courses for families with deaf children can help deaf children access language in their early years.✍️

We know that 90% of deaf children are born to hearing families who are less likely to know BSL. Without free BSL classes, these parents may struggle to communicate with their children during their crucial early years. 👶

When a deaf child does not have access to language during the early years, this can impact their development. Two-thirds of deaf children are already behind when they start school compared with just one-third of all children in England.

Free BSL courses for families can help to solve this by giving parents a way to communicate with their deaf child.

It only takes two minutes to write to your MP. 🚧

💭 Did you know… there’s a big difference between sign languages (like British Sign Language) and sign systems (like Makaton)? 💭

It can be confusing at first to understand the differences between British Sign Language (BSL), Sign Supported English (SSE), Makaton and Signalong, among others. So we’ve broken down the different sign systems and how they differ from sign languages here: https://bit.ly/3U8PKGu
