Have you heard of auditory memory? This is a skill that helps us to learn language, develop our literacy skills, follow instructions and take part in social interactions.

It’s our ability to hear information and store it in our brains and recall it when needed. It means that we can remember what we have heard and supports us to know what to do next.

Our youngest children are still learning this foundation skill and so sometimes it can seem like they haven’t listened or aren’t paying attention, but what they really need is less for their auditory memory to hold onto while we give them the time and space to learn.

For example, when you are giving your little one some instructions about what you would like them to do, you might say “Tidy up your toys, put your coat and shoes on and choose a book to take to Grandma’s house.” That’s a lot of information to hang onto! They are having to remember and process what you said, complete each of the steps in turn, along with thinking about what comes next. It's no wonder that they can get lost and confused!

It can be helpful to break longer instructions down into smaller chunks to start with building these up as your little one’s skills develop. There are also lots of fun activities to do that can help support auditory memory like singing songs and rhymes together, telling stories and playing Simon Says.
