How did I get into this work?

♥️ I have been working with young people for over 25 years, a number of experiences have brought me to where I am. I had a challenging time in secondary school with anxiety, and looking back if I had had a Mentor or a Counsellor to talk to, I think it would have made all the difference to me. So, it is no surprise I am doing what I love to do.

♥️ When I was 25, I became very ill with M.E and my life changed dramatically for 4 ½ long years. It was a really difficult time, but a life-changing one, I began learning about myself, reading lots and improving my self-esteem.

♥️ I took a leap of faith and flew across to California to train on Louise Hay’s Teacher Training course, it was mind blowing and I came back a different person.

❤️Then in my 50’s I decided to go to University and made some lovely friends and earned a BA (Hons) in Counselling.

♥️ The basis of my work is self-esteem – I believe that how we think of ourselves and more importantly how we treat ourselves can have a dramatic impact on our life, from our mental and physical health, relationships to our choices.

❤️I now see clients age 16+ individuals and couples and relationships. I work face to face in north Cumbria and online.

Our monthly online groups are friendly, warm, and welcoming. Many people find they come away feeling less alone. We often share books or podcasts that we have found helpful.

In my counselling practice I have experienced that clients can feel that diagnosis offers people validation for all the years they have felt different. This realisation can also bring up a myriad of emotions, from loss, hope, anger and these need an outlet.

The aim of this group is to create a space where clients can talk about their experiences, share ideas and their feelings where they feel heard and understood. There is no pressure to talk and you are welcome to listen as sometimes you can gain as much as from hearing others’ experiences.

I keep these groups small (7 plus me) so we all have time to share.

To all my therapist followers…

What’s the best thing about becoming a counsellor for you? 🤔

For me, it has been connecting to my inner child and my inner teen.

I never thought to link my thoughts, beliefs and behaviours to my younger self before then.

To the experiences I’d lived through as a child.

I was just so unaware and uninterested in knowing myself because I was embarrassed by who I used to be.

I tried to cover her up so that people would like me.

But now, I shout about her from the rooftops because she’s amazing.

I really do love myself and it’s such a special relationship.

So don’t be shy, what’s your thing? 😊
