As we head into the final stretch of the summer holidays, there’s still plenty of time to enjoy a few more good books before we return to school! 📖

Reading regularly can help children:
📖 Maintain their reading skills over the long break
💭 Develop imagination and creativity
🗣️ Build vocabulary and language skills
🧠 Support concentration and comprehension
💙 Develop a lifelong love of books and stories

And it doesn't need to feel like schoolwork! Let your child choose something they genuinely enjoy, whether that's a storybook, comic, fact book, magazine or a book about their favourite hobby.

Even a few minutes of reading each day can make a difference, and it’s a lovely way to gently get those learning minds ready for the new school year too.

5 Things to Do Before Summer Ends ☀️

There are still a few weeks of the summer holidays left, and you don't need expensive days out to make them memorable.

Some of the best summer fun can happen right at home or in your local community, with a little imagination and some time together.

We've put together 5 simple, free or low-cost ideas to keep children busy, active and having fun before it's time to head back to school.

🌳 Head to the Park
Pack some snacks, take a ball and spend a few hours playing outdoors.

🌿 Go on a Nature Hunt
How many different leaves, birds, flowers or insects can you spot?

🎲 Have a Family Games Night
Put the screens away and bring out your favourite cards, puzzles or board games.

🎨 Get Creative
Paint, draw, make something from recycled materials or try some pavement chalk art.

🧁 Bake Something Together
Choose a simple recipe and let your child practise measuring, mixing and decorating.

This month's One Small Change challenge is simple: stay hydrated by drinking more water!

As the weather gets warmer and children spend more time being active, staying hydrated is more important than ever.

We're encouraging our pupils and families to make one small change by choosing water more often and remembering to bring a water bottle to school each day.

Why not make it a family challenge this month and see who can remember to drink enough water each day?

What has your child learned recently that has made you proud?

With summer in full swing and much of the UK experiencing exceptionally warm weather, it's a good reminder of just how important it is for children to stay hydrated.

Recent heatwaves have prompted health advice for schools and families to encourage children to drink more water and take extra care in the heat.

Drinking enough water helps children to:

💧 Stay hydrated while playing and being active
🧠 Improve concentration and learning
⚡ Maintain energy levels throughout the day
😊 Support their mood and overall wellbeing
🌞 Regulate body temperature in warmer weather

Encourage your child to bring a refillable water bottle to school each day and remind them to drink regularly, even if they don't feel thirsty.

Small healthy habits like these can make a big difference to helping every child feel their best. 💙
