John, Lesley and myself are proud Ambassadors and it’s such an important part of the work we do at Keighley Dementia Advice Community Group . Who are the incredible volunteers delivering Dementia Friends Sessions?

A Dementia Friends Ambassador is an Alzheimer’s Society volunteer who encourages others to make a positive difference to people living with dementia in their community. They do this by running Dementia Friends Sessions and giving participants information about the personal impact of dementia, and what they can do to help.

We're so grateful to all of our volunteers for raising awareness and changing attitudes about dementia through delivering the sessions.

💙 WEDNESDAY DROP-IN – KEIGHLEY LIBRARY 💙

Tomorrow, Wednesday, our friendly team will be at Keighley Library from 11am–2pm for our weekly drop-in session.

If you or someone you know has concerns about dementia, whether you’re worried about your own memory, supporting a loved one, or simply don’t know where to turn, please come along and have a chat with us.

There’s no appointment needed just call in. We’re here to listen, offer advice and information, or simply have a friendly chat over a cuppa. ☕

You don’t need to have all the answers, and you don’t have to wait until things become difficult before asking for support.

A warm welcome, a friendly face and a cuppa are always waiting for you.

Dementia is not a journey you have to travel alone.

As we mark World Alzheimer’s Day today, we’re pleased to announce our upcoming community event, bringing people together to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s and dementia and to offer support in our local community.

On Saturday 31st October, Home Instead Ilkley and The Rainbow Care Group- Wharfe Valley and North Bradford are bringing our local community together for a friendly and informative day all about dementia, support and living well

Whether you’re caring for a loved one, supporting someone with dementia, would like to learn more, or simply want to find out what support is available locally, you’re very welcome to join us💚

I’m a Dementia Friends Ambassador for the Alzheimer's Society and together with my two colleagues John and Lesley deliver FREE Dementia Awareness sessions in Keighley, Craven and surrounding area. In World Alzheimer’s month let’s work together and make a difference to people affected by Dementia.

💜 IT’S WORLD ALZHEIMER’S MONTH! 💜

And we’re starting the week by getting out into our community and raising dementia awareness! 🧠✨

Throughout September, Keighley Dementia Advice has been delivering Dementia Awareness sessions to local groups, organisations and communities helping people understand more about dementia, challenge misconceptions and learn how they can make a difference.

Because understanding dementia matters.

A little more knowledge.
A little more understanding.
A little more compassion.

Together, these can make a BIG difference to people living with dementia and those who support them. 💜

So let’s keep talking, keep learning and keep raising awareness this September! 🙌

💙 DEMENTIA AWARENESS IN AN ACUTE HOSPITAL SETTING 💙

Today, together with my colleague John we were delighted to visit Airedale Hospital to deliver a Dementia Friends Awareness session for the Physiotherapy Team.

For physiotherapists working in an acute hospital environment, understanding dementia can be particularly valuable.

Many of the patients they support are older people recovering from falls, injuries, illness or surgery, and some will also be living with dementia whether that diagnosis is known, newly recognised or not immediately apparent.

Hospital can be an unfamiliar and overwhelming environment.

Busy wards, unfamiliar faces, changes to routine, pain, illness and the stress of being away from home can all present additional challenges for someone living with dementia.

That’s why small changes in understanding and communication can make such a meaningful difference.

Our Dementia Friends Awareness sessions provide an opportunity to explore what dementia can mean for an individual and consider how some of the learning can be applied in real-life situations including the workplace.

For the Physio Team, it was great to discuss how greater awareness can support their interactions with patients and help ensure that people living with dementia are treated with understanding, dignity and respect throughout their hospital journey.

A huge thank you to the Physio team at Airedale Hospital for welcoming us and for taking the time to learn more about dementia. Your commitment to improving the experience of people affected by dementia is something to be celebrated.

☕️ Up bright and early…

New month, new week and a lovely morning spent networking with my friend at “Ladies Who Latte” lots of coffee, conversations, connections and a great speaker! 💬✨

I was there wearing my Dementia Advocate hat, raising awareness and talking to women about the importance of knowing where to turn for support.

And something really struck me…

💜 Every single person I spoke to had been touched by dementia in some way.

That’s why raising awareness matters so much. Dementia affects families, friendships and communities, often in ways we don’t see.

And this is exactly why Keighley Dementia Advice Community Group is so important. A place where people living with dementia, families and carers can find information, advice, support and, sometimes most importantly, someone who simply understands.

A brilliant morning, some lovely new connections and plenty of reminders that we’re stronger when we support each other. 💜

Now… where’s that coffee? 😂☕️

🎂❤️ This year, for my birthday, I’m asking for something very special…your help

On Sunday 29th November I’m taking part in the 5K Skipton Santa Fun Run to raise money for Keighley Dementia Advice Community Group. 🎅

This is a cause incredibly close to my heart. My dad and I cared for my mum when she had vascular dementia, so I know personally just how heartbreaking, challenging and lonely that journey can sometimes feel. I also know how much it can mean to have someone there who understands, listens and offers support. 💙

That’s why I set up our volunteer-led group with my former colleagues John and Lesley. We receive no funding and provide our service completely free, because we genuinely want to make a difference to people affected by dementia in our community.

So, this year, I’d love to turn my birthday into something positive. If you can spare even a small amount to sponsor me, it would mean so much and could make a real difference to someone else. 🙏

🌼 VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY – SKIPTON 🌼

In anticipation of the new Keighley Dementia Advice outreach sessions at Fisher Medical Centre Skipton, we are now looking for a special person to join us as a Welcome & Support Volunteer. 💙

We’re looking for someone who:

🌿 Has lived experience of dementia – through supporting a family member or loved one.
🌿 Lives in Skipton or can travel easily to the session.
🌿 Has a warm, friendly and reassuring manner.
🌿 Enjoys meeting people and helping others feel comfortable and welcome.
🌿 Can offer a listening ear and a friendly face to visitors attending the session.

The role will involve helping to create a welcoming atmosphere, greeting visitors, offering a friendly chat and helping people feel at ease when they arrive.

The sessions will start on the 16th October and take place every Friday, 10am–12pm, at Fisher Community Room, Fisher Medical Centre, Coach Street, Skipton.

This is a wonderful opportunity to use your own experience to make a real difference to other people affected by dementia in our local community. 💙
