🍀All the best of luck to everyone receiving GCSE results tomorrow! 🍀
Whatever numbers you get on your piece of paper, just remember that they don’t define you.
They are just a tiny bit of what makes you you along with all the other things you are wonderful at, things that can’t be measured by tests. Like how you make your friends laugh and how happy your family are to have you in their lives. Like how good you are at sport or music or juggling or baking cakes or cheering up your little sister when she falls over or painting nails or gaming or …..
If you do well, be very proud of yourself! You deserve it! Celebrate that achievement and all that hard work!
But if those grades aren’t quite what you wanted, don’t worry. The sky won’t fall in and the world won’t end. There are always other paths to take, it might take you a bit longer to get where you’re headed and it might take a bit more work, but you can still do it!
The next few years are going to be so exciting as you finally get to drop all the subjects you hate (!) and choose your own path.
Good luck tomorrow!
(And try not to worry!)

🌱 Supporting learners who take a different path
Many families choose home education or find themselves outside the traditional school system for a variety of different reasons. I also know that, for parents, this can feel both empowering and overwhelming at times — especially when it comes to maths and particularly once children reach secondary age.
I’ve been teaching for 25 years and recently left mainstream education to focus on maths tutoring. I offer a limited number of regular daytime sessions for those children not in our traditional education system for whatever reason.
Having recently completed my master’s research focusing on dyscalculia, I am now training to be a dyscalculia assessor and I have years of experience supporting neurodivergent learners. I understand that every child’s relationship with maths is unique — for some it’s about encouraging curiosity and confidence, while for others it’s gently helping them overcome anxiety and years of feeling they are ‘rubbish at maths’.
I support a wide range of learners: from those aiming toward qualifications, to those who want a more fun, child-led, exploratory approach to maths. My sessions combine core maths skills with space for curiosity and discovery, helping children gain both confidence and practical maths skills for life.
If you’re looking for support that recognises your child as an individual first and foremost — not just as a set of grades or levels — I have 2 daytime slots available from September. Sessions can be small group or 1:1, depending on what suits and my priority is always creating a safe, encouraging space where learners can thrive.
📩 Please get in touch if this feels like something you’d like to explore for your child and we can have a chat.

Small Group Maths Tuition – Limited Spaces for September ✏️
🤔 Struggling in a packed classroom?
My small group sessions give your child the space to actually be heard. With just a handful of students per group, there’s time for plenty of questions and every misconception to be explored on the spot, so that the maths really clicks. ✨
Learning face-to-face, in person, makes all the difference: real conversations, real connection and a tutor who’s seen it all before and knows when to step in before confidence starts to dip.
Small groups mean big gains: more confidence 📈, more participation 🙋, and maths that finally starts to make sense 🧮
📌 Only a few spaces left for September — get in touch today to secure your child’s place!

This has made my day! This lad has been coming all this year and always works so hard- such a well deserved award for him! 🏆

Well - that’s it!
I’ve just taught my last session of the 25-26 academic year ✏️ Lucy Hooton Learning is closing for business for just under a fortnight while I go on my first term-time holiday, which also happens to be childfree 😱 🏖️ 🥂
I can’t believe it’s been a whole year since I left my job of 24 years (and the regular salary 💰😳) and became my own boss. It’s gone so quickly!
And what a year it’s been…. in numbers….
📚 63 students helped with their maths confidence
📈 Over 850 sessions of tuition delivered
🎓1 MA completed
🔢 Level 7 Dyscalculia Assessor Qualification started
🗣️4th Dyscalculia Conference attended
📋 Now running a waiting list!
And on the personal side, my own kids have now officially grown up: first year of degree done and A Levels finished. I’ve found more time for me: long walks 🌿, regular gym visits 🏋️, getting back involved with scouts, time with family and friends, and more lay ins! 🛌
So, what next… well, as 26-27 sees us experimenting with an empty nest 🪹 and youngest goes on his travels🧳, I thought I’d fill my time with another project - dyscalculia consultancy - a chance to get into schools and empower teachers and teaching assistants to better support those children who struggle with maths 🗓️📐. Watch this space….
But for now, I’m packing away my uno cards, fraction tiles, counters and whiteboards and I’m off on my jollies!
😊 Thank you again to all my families for entrusting your child’s learning to me! See you again on the 28th July when the summer holiday sessions start….

I found myself with an unexpected day off from tutoring yesterday so decided, quite last minute, to get myself off to Tutorfest 2026 which turned out to be one of my best decisions!
There were some excellent guest speakers (including the brilliant Mr P) leaving me with loads to think about, not just in terms of tutoring but also for the dyscalculia consultancy side of my business that I’m in the process of launching.
The location of this festival-conference couldn’t have been better - Blackpool tower! So, lunch was afternoon tea in the ballroom accompanied by dancing (I just watched!) and we even got to play the slots at the end!
Possibly the best thing though was the chance to talk to other tutors and make new friends! Running your own business by yourself is amazing but can feel a bit lonely at times and the chance to talk to others in the same boat was fantastic!
Anyway, I have a long list of takeaways that I’m going to try not to think about when I’m by the pool next week (but inevitably will!)

Since SATs, my Y6 - soon to be- Y7 group (who’ve called themselves unsurprisingly ‘The six-sevens’!) have been doing more than keeping their arithmetic skills sharp.
Last week, we explored the patterns in triangular numbers and Pascal’s triangle and this week our work on co-ordinates in the four quadrants led to a very intense, pitched 3-way battleships battle! ⛴️
