It's finally time to say goodbye to the first benches we had in the nursery. I built them around 5 years ago with wood from an old barn and they've lasted well but now they have succumbed to the elements. Thank you for your service good and faithful benches 🫡

All 4 sides of this juniper (junpierus procumbens nana), a species some people think is a cheat species because it has naturally dense, neat foliage and falling branches. It is a little prickly though!
We bought this from a garden centre because it looked like a little top hat in a pot! Now it has a strong a-symmetry and maintains a balance through the visual weight of the pot and a strong trunk.

Bristlecone pine is one of the longest lived trees species. The oldest is more than 4800 years old! They grow at high altitude in places like the Sierra Nevada.
I am trying to put some of that dead wood into a very small and very young example and it is so slow-growing it could still be decades before its truly presentable!

Kusamono are small potted plants that can accompany your bonsai. They sit next to each other to complement or contrast the style of the tree. You can use pretty much anything that will grow in a small pot; I've seen dandelions and nettles used and they look great!

What a great day sharing a passion for bonsai with some new folk. We were so busy beavering away that I didn't get any photos! It alway is such a joy to see someone who has never tried the hobby before taking a real interest in how to create bonsai and seeing how they apply their own knowledge as they learn 😊
