It was a beautiful autumnal morning at Broughton Sanctuary for this collaborative Land Art workshop- and I think we made a little bit of magic on the path through the Cosmic Garden. ✨

As an Approved Practitioner with The Therapeutic Forest CIC I was offered the opportunity to complete this course and I really enjoyed it. Teenagers are also included so it’s perfect for my freelance work with younger children and the wellbeing sessions I run in my school. Some of the results of one of our recent walks are below. 🤩🙌🏼

This is a Common Sexton Beetle and it came to share my sit spot today.

It collaborates with others to bury the carcasses of dead animals such as mice and birds, shaping them into a ball once the fur and feathers have been removed and coating them with a substance that delays decomposition. It then uses the dead ball for food and as a site to lay its eggs.

It all sounds quite gruesome but at the same time absolutely fascinating. Parents beetles interact and communicate with each other, negotiating and cooperating to nurture their young.

Isn’t nature just beautiful and amazing?! 🪲🤩🙌🏼
