As September approaches, many parents feel the shift before the school year has even begun. The rhythm changes. The pace tightens. The children need support. Work picks up. The invisible load quietly returns from its summer holiday, refreshed and ready.

If you would like some gentle support for the next season, my Parenting with Heart on-demand course is available on my website.

It includes practices around loving-kindness, compassion, joy and steadiness, created for parents who want to feel less reactive and more connected in real family life.

Not perfect parenting.
Not calm at all costs.
A way of returning to yourself, so you can return to your family with a little more space.

You can find it through the link in my bio, or message me if you would like the details.

We often prepare for September by sorting children’s things:
shoes, bags, uniforms, lunchboxes, calendars, forms.

Useful, of course. But perhaps this year, prepare one small support point for yourself too.

Somewhere to pause.
Somewhere your nervous system can land, even briefly.

Not because you are trying to become a calm, enlightened parent who never gets annoyed by missing socks. Just because you are human. And humans need somewhere to come back to.

September has a very particular energy.
New notebooks. New routines. New expectations. New chances to imagine that this year everyone will put their shoes in the right place and mornings will unfold like a gentle Scandinavian advert.

And then real life arrives.

So this year, perhaps September does not need to begin with self-improvement.
Maybe you do not need to become more disciplined, more organised, more productive, more patient, more anything.

Maybe the better question is:
What support do I need for this next rhythm?

In my work, that support might come through mindfulness, coaching, or looking at how your home can hold the season better.

Because the return to routine is not only a diary shift.

It is a body shift.
A family shift.
A nervous system shift.

What would make September feel 5% more supported for you?

September can look like a fresh start.
It can feel like a project-management spreadsheet with shoes.

For working parents, the return to rhythm is not only practical. It is emotional, sensory and cognitive.
New schedules. New teachers. New forms. New childcare patterns. Work picking up. Children adjusting. Summer ending. Everyone slightly tired, slightly hopeful, slightly resistant.

And often, one parent is carrying the invisible architecture of that transition.

Who needs what?
What has changed?
What needs buying?
Who is anxious?
What did the school email say?
Where is the PE kit?
Why are there already 14 dates to remember?

The danger is that we treat September as a personal organisation challenge.
Try harder. Plan better. Get a nicer calendar. Become a woman who laminates things.

But perhaps the better question is:
What support does this next season need?

Support in the diary.
Support at work.
Support from partners.
Support in the home.
Support for the nervous system.

Transition is not failure.
It is a real load.

As September approaches, what is one piece of support that would make the next rhythm 5% softer? How are you going to get it?

Before September arrives with its forms, bags, timetables, shoes, lunchboxes, school emails and general atmosphere of ā€œright, here we go againā€, make one small space for yourself.

Not a whole room.
I am not suggesting you ask the family to vacate the premises so you can create a meditation wing, although let’s admit the thought has its charm.

Just one place.
A chair. A shelf. A bedside table. A corner. A drawer. A spot near a window. A place where your body knows: I can pause here.

Family homes often become beautifully organised around everyone else’s needs.
Children’s bags. Work things. Food. Laundry. Homework. Sports kit. Life admin.
But the parent needs to exist in the home too.
Not only as the person who manages it.
As someone who is held by it.

What small space could become yours before September?

A 3-minute transition practice for the end of summer.

Not to organise everything.

Not to launch yourself into September with a colour-coded life plan and a suspiciously optimistic stationery order.

Just to pause long enough to notice what this next season is asking of you.

Ask:

What rhythm is ending?
What rhythm is beginning?
What needs support?
What can be made simpler?
Where do I need one place to pause?

September is not only a diary shift.

It is a body shift. A family shift. A nervous system shift.

One breath. One room. One small shift.

That is enough to begin.
