At the weekend one of my students asked me if she could sing something in her native language. The answer was a resounding YES! I actively encourage students who speak multiple languages to also sing in them. It didn’t matter that I couldn’t understand the lyrics, the immediate tenderness and intense emotion that switching to her native tongue brought was a joy to hear.

For my native English speakers, learning a song in a foreign language improves pronunciation, rhythm, and articulatory control…and of course music is one of the easiest ways to appreciate other cultures.

I really enjoyed working on a cover of this country song by Zach Bryan. This student has been told she sounds similar to Adele and so I thought the best thing to do was something completely different and let her explore her voice within a new genre which I personally think sounds more authentic. She picked the song and introduced me to this amazing artist, great choice.

This was my second week coaching the vocalists and I absolutely loved seeing the full band coming together to practice. This week we worked on projection and the essence of singing “as if no one is listening”.

Singing sad songs can be good for you by providing a cathartic release, helping you feel less alone, and even triggering a calming biological response. Singing can help process negative emotions, making you feel more peaceful and able to cope with sadness.

After a busy day I often sing and play a song. It helps me to unwind & forget about everything else in that moment. It could be something I heard on the radio or an old song stuck in my head. I quickly look up the chords & away I go. It might be a bit rough and ready but the point of this exercise isn’t to sound perfect, it’s to use singing as a way to reduce stress and be in the moment.
