I can feel that channel 4 ADHD documentary sitting heavy with me today, and I didn’t even watch it. I can’t right now, because I know it will send me in to a spiral. I can feel it in other nd friends, and colleagues, and clients today. The cloak of shame that undiagnosed people (particularly women) carry of not being seen. Not being heard. Not being believed. I can feel what I call ‘the cloak of shame’ round my shoulders today.
I have worked with nd late diagnosed people (particularly women) who in earlier life have been suicidal, some have made attempts to take their own life. I’ve seen the mental health effects, the trauma of years of self abandonment, chasing dopamine (to function to survive) in all sorts of toxic ways. The effects on the nervous system and the body.
The women he talks about here is me, and so many other women. Invalidated our whole lives by a system that failed to acknowledge our needs. Thank you adhd chatter man for standing up for us.
Do not tell me adhd is not real. And for anyone that has felt invalidated by recent discrimination and targeting of the recent impact of the media in this slander masking as ‘conversation’, please know that I see you! Not only as a late diagnosed nd woman myself but also as a professional that’s pretty fu***ng good at her job… Adhd is real. And self advocacy and self acceptance is key. Chin up, keep loving yourself exactly as you are, and quite frankly, ‘f**k em’ x
