This week we’ve been asked and discussing with parents whether a degree is valuable in the current age of AI… an interesting debate.

We decided the key question was: “Does this degree lead to work where people trust me to make important decisions?” If yes, the degree is likely to remain valuable. If the degree mainly provides information that AI can already generate, you’ll need to supplement it with practical experience, a portfolio, or specialised skills.

For someone starting today, perhaps some things to consider:

1. A degree in a field with clear professional demand and strong barriers to entry, or

2. A cheaper degree combined with intensive real-world projects, internships, and AI literacy.

The days when a degree alone guaranteed a good career are fading, but the days when degrees are useless are not here. In many careers, AI is making expertise more valuable, not less.
