Your midwifery journey could start sooner.

So, how long does it take to become a Midwife? To qualify as a Registered Midwife, you'll need to complete an approved midwifery degree, which usually takes three years if you study full-time. Before that, universities will want to see A-Levels or an equivalent Level 3 qualification, alongside GCSEs in English and Maths.

If you don't have A-Levels, you don't need to spend years going back to college. The Access to Higher Education Diploma (Midwifery) is built for adults who want a faster route into university, and with learndirect you can study it online and fit your learning around the rest of your life.

No A-Levels? You can still become a Nurse.

If you've been wondering what qualifications do I need to be a Nurse, you're not alone. She had to leave her studies. Years later, she had to leave her job, but Zaiba still found a way forward 💙

Zaiba had to discontinue her diploma in India when she got married and moved to the UK. After settling here, she returned to education, completed her GCSEs and became a teaching assistant in a primary school.

Supporting children, including SEND pupils, helped Zaiba discover her passion for teaching and education.

When a serious family illness meant she had to leave her job temporarily, Zaiba found another way to continue progressing. She enrolled on our online Access to Higher Education Diploma (Education Professions), allowing her to study from home alongside her responsibilities.

Meet Prince.

At 58, Prince is continuing to build his career in education while studying our Higher Level Teaching Assistant course. 📚

Prince enrolled in July 2021 and now works full-time as a Functional Skills Mathematics Tutor and Coordinator of Mathematics Club in a school.

For Prince, education is about making a difference:

“My life is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of children and to provide the invisible hand to education.” 💙

Online learning gives him the flexibility to study alongside his Teaching Assistant career, while tutor feedback has helped him develop professionally and build transferable skills. 💻

His advice to anyone considering further study?

“Learning is a continuous process, and you can never age with learning.” ✨
