Men’s Health Week: Why Listening Still Matters

According to the Men’s Health Forum and ONS data, men account for around three‑quarters of suicides in the UK. Yet men are significantly less likely to access mental health support, including talking therapies, and often seek help later, when they are already in crisis.

Research consistently points to the same barrier:
not a lack of need, but a lack of spaces where men feel able to talk without judgement.
Many men grow up with strong messages about self‑reliance and “coping alone”. Over time, this can make emotional expression feel unfamiliar or unsafe.
This is where skilled listening matters.

Counselling training isn’t about fixing people. It’s about learning how to:
• listen without rushing to solutions
• sit with difficult emotions
• create environments where people feel heard

As Men’s Health Week begins, it’s worth remembering:
supporting men’s mental health starts with how we listen, every day.
