Important points about being safer online 👍

Today is Safer Internet Day! The Internet can be an incredible tool for inspiration, human connection and support – which is why it’s so important that you create a space that works for you. Here’s a few tips that might help 👇

🟢 Being online should make you better about things, not worse. Consider who you follow - if an account or hashtag you're following makes you feel worse, unfollow it!

🟢 Did you know you can mute keywords and hashtags? Most platforms normally have a guide on how to do this in their user centre.

🟢 If something you see online worries you, it's probably worrying someone else too. Most platforms have tools for reporting worrying posts or accounts posting worrying content.

🟢 If being online is affecting your day-to-day, it's okay to take a break or close your social media apps for a while.

I absolutely love this, I thought it was so powerful when I first saw it. It's by illustrator .studio and I thought it's such a transformative way of showing how we all make progress in a different way, at a different speed, with plenty of challenges along the way. Everybody's journey and you're not a "failure" if yours doesn't look like everybody else's. 💖

This year the will inspire children to use their curiosity and creativity to discover the science behind the everyday! Today is the official launch and our libraries have fun, free activities for children and families all summer long. Pop into your local branch to sign up and get involved!

A great challenge to start in the summer holidays!

Our Congratulations go to Freya for the amazing achievement of reading 100 library books to complete the Book Track 100 challenge. What a star!
Please ask at your local library if your child is interested in signing up to this challenge. The Summer Reading challenge "Gadgeteers" starts soon and the 6 books in that challenge can be counted towards your 100 books for Book Track. There is no time limit for the 100 book challenge as it is ongoing.

And finally …

Today we're looking at the last window of our "Journey Through the Decades" display for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee - the 2020s. It goes without saying that this decade has been one of many hardships, with events such as the pandemic and war in Ukraine affecting so many across the world. But it's also important to highlight the things that have brought people together in this time: lockdown zoom events like the Ukulele Orchestra, clapping for the NHS, the Eurovision Song Contest (where Ukraine overwhelmingly won), and of course the Queen's Platinum Jubilee!

Our display will stay in the windows of the library for the next few weeks at least, so do come along and have a look!
