The 6th Form received gold status for inspiring students to create positive social impact from the WildHearts Foundation and another gold status award from Babson Social Innovation Lab in the USA.

The work they were recognised for was the social enterprise which supported 27 families in West Africa this year and their SDG work on Life below Water, combating plastics pollution.

What a wonderful finish for their academic year!

We are proud to be celebrating a double triumph after winning both teacher and student of the year awards in a competition inspired by Dragons’ Den star Peter Jones! Avonbourne Trust’s Director of 6th Form, Kathryn Loughnan, and Year 12 student Lydia, were given the special accolades in the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy awards.

Kathryn won after being nominated by her students for her record in helping the Trust win national awards, for giving up her free time to support them and for her passion. As one student wrote: “I haven’t been taught by another teacher like her that provides so much support and passion. She has inspired me to do greater things.”

And Lydia’s recognition was for combining her studies with years dedicated to helping others. She helped to forge the award-winning social enterprise Project Emerge, which provides finance to Third World entrepreneurs, and tirelessly backs Avonbourne Trust’s adopted charity Ocean Stars Trust, which supports Sri Lankan communities affected by the 2004 Tsunami.

In addition to scooping staff and student of the year in the PJEA awards, Avonbourne 6th Former Joshua was also a finalist in the Inspiration award.

On Friday 5th July Avonbourne Trust held its annual Earth Charter Awards, at the The Green House Hotel - Eco Friendly Hotel in Bournemouth, the culmination of a process in which Avonbourne and Harewood college students have been asked to judge and award businesses that go above and beyond in instilling green and people values.

This year’s winners were: Hengistbury Head Visitor Centre and Local Nature Reserve, Holt Recruitment Group, Kooth (part of XenZone), Bournemouth In Bloom, The Green House Hotel - Eco Friendly Hotel in Bournemouth and Koh Thai.

The businesses picked up their awards at a special ceremony hosted by the Green House Hotel, Bournemouth and our own students were there to reveal the winners and hand out the prizes.
