Southbourne School of English Southbourne School of English is a family-owned English language school based in Southbourne, Dorset All our hosts are within walking distance of the school.

Southbourne School of English is a family run school that was established in 1966. It is located in a beautiful residential area of Bournemouth where young families and professionals live. It is in a friendly, safe and clean area and is on very good bus routes, and close to a railway station. It is only a short walk from the local high street and 10 minutes to the beautiful beach, which is one of the longest sandy beaches in England. We offer first class education in a welcoming and caring environment. We have interactive smartboards in all of our 22 classrooms. We provide a comfortable learning experience for our students as all our rooms have air-conditioning and heating systems and comfortable classroom furniture. Our student cafeteria can seat 110 students and has an internet area with 10 computers. There is excellent free Wi-Fi throughout the school for students with smart phones and tablets. When the weather is good, the garden has plenty of space to enjoy break and lunch time. We have the capacity for 300 students in the winter months and 330 in the summer months. The school is open all year round for individual adult students and juniors including groups from 10 years upwards. Our students live with local homestay that are ALL within easy walking distance of the school. Hosts that accommodate young students are police checked to make sure they are suitable and all hosts are interviewed and visited regularly by our accommodation officer. We also have a dedicated welfare officer to assist and support students. Many of our hosts have been working with us for many years and love meeting students from around the world.

Haruno, one of our lovely Japanese students, has been having a wonderful time at the school. In a test essay she wrote about her experience so far, and we’d like to share it with you:

“In Southbourne, everything is new for me. I found a lot of differences between Japan and here. First of all, the willingness of the students for lessons are better than in Japan. In Japan few people want to say something in front of people, but it wasn’t here. I felt that [it] is very nice and we have to be like them.

Second, the atmosphere of the town and people is totally different. People in here are very friendly. When I say “hello”, everyone smiles at me and says it back. I’m very happy with that.

Third, there are a lot of differences in my daily life. The foods are totally different here. In Japan, we basically eat rice, but they don’t here. It is not a surprising thing, but I enjoy the difference. Also the ingredients are different. Miso and soy sauce is not common here, I think.

10 days have passed since I came to Southbourne, and I enjoy many of differences from Japan and here. I want to continue learning something new.” 🇯🇵🇬🇧❤️

From 1966 to 2026, we’ve welcomed many students to the school, offering English programmes to students of levels from beginner to advanced.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Italo Gallina, beloved husband, father, businessman, and director of Southbourne School of English since 1974, who passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early hours of Sunday 17th May.

For several decades, Italo dedicated his life to his work, running the school in its very early years when the EFL industry was very new. Building not only an English school, but a warm and welcoming community that touched the lives of countless students, families, and teachers over the years.

Beyond his work, he was a devoted husband to his wife, Gail, a loving father to his two children, Paul and Natalie, and a proud grandfather to four beautiful grandchildren -
Leonardo, Tabitha, Samuel, and Ella - who brought him immense joy and pride.

His legacy lives on through the many lives he influenced, the school he built with care and dedication, and the family who stood beside him throughout his life.

He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered always. 🕊️

Here’s our quick recap of another unforgettable IALC event, this time in Salerno, hosted by the inspiring and equally elegant at 🇮🇹

We had valuable meetings with over 60 highly reputable IALC agents from every corner of the globe, and met more during the event too! 🤝

The highlights were the fantastic local food, visiting Accademia Italiana’s school, a unique opera experience in a classic theatre, and the final evening’s Gala dinner and party, where everyone dressed to impress ✨
