Starting secondary school is a big step. New subjects, different teachers, increased expectations, and greater independence can take some time to adjust to.

The first few weeks are a great opportunity to spot any areas where your child may need a little extra support before small gaps become bigger ones.

At Mrs Wood’s Tutoring, we provide focused, personalised support to help children strengthen their Maths and English skills, build confidence, and settle into their new academic routine.

A little support early can make the journey ahead much smoother.

📩 If your child has just started secondary school, DM us to chat about how we can help.

Good luck to everyone sitting their 11+ over the next couple of days. Big shout out to my guys who are going to smash it

It’s so tempting to jump in and give the answer, but children learn more when they do the thinking themselves.

Try asking “What do you already know?” before offering help. Point them towards a worked example rather than giving them the solution, and let them have a go even if their first attempt isn’t quite right.

The goal isn’t just getting the answer correct. It’s helping them build confidence, problem-solving skills and independence.

So praise the effort and the approach, not just the tick at the end.

Many children start believing that maths simply isn’t their thing. Once that mindset takes hold, even straightforward questions can feel much harder than they really are.

The truth is, maths can be learned. With clear explanations, the right support, and a pace that suits the child, confidence can grow alongside ability.

Often, what looks like a lack of ability is simply a gap in understanding that was never properly addressed. Find the gap, work through it step by step, and the confidence often starts to follow.

If your child has started saying “I’m just not good at maths,” it may be time to look at what’s really holding them back.

Summer learning doesn't have to mean daily standoffs. A short, predictable slot each day works far better than a long session nobody wants to start, and finishing on something your child can do well keeps them willing to come back tomorrow.

Keep it light, praise the effort rather than the marks, and momentum builds on its own.

The start of a new GCSE year can feel overwhelming, especially when small gaps from previous years are still there.

Getting the right support early can make a big difference. Instead of waiting until problems become harder to fix, targeted tuition can help your child strengthen weaker areas, build confidence, and start the new term feeling prepared.

Our sessions are tailored to what your child actually needs, focusing on the areas that will have the greatest impact rather than simply working through more material.

Whether your child is starting Year 10 or Year 11, early support can make the year ahead feel much more manageable.

You don’t need flashcards or hours of revision to build your child’s vocabulary this summer.

Small, everyday habits can make a real difference.

📖 Read together and talk about unfamiliar words
🗣️ Choose a “word of the day” and use it in conversation
🚗 Turn car journeys into quick synonym and opposite games
💬 Encourage your child to ask what new words mean and use them in different sentences

A strong vocabulary supports more than just English. It can help with 11+ verbal reasoning, reading comprehension and GCSE English too.

The key? Keep it simple, regular and fun learning doesn’t always have to feel like work.

• Your house number
• Your street name
• Your car registration
• What School they go to
• Your child’s age
• Your name
• You’re married

That’s before you put a status on the photo giving their names and more information

Please don’t post these photos, keep your children safe

For many children, exam-day nerves come from not knowing exactly what to expect. An unfamiliar setting, instructions, strict timings, and moving between different sections can feel daunting—but understanding the process beforehand can make the experience much less overwhelming.

At Mrs Wood’s Tutoring, we help children become familiar with the structure, expectations, and pace of the 11+, so they can walk into exam day feeling prepared rather than surprised.

The aim isn't to remove every bit of nervousness—it’s to make sure your child knows what’s coming and feels ready to handle it.

📩 Have questions about the 11+ process? Send us a DM.
