This week…
💚🦔💚

It has become an annual tradition of ours to visit Emmett’s Garden to celebrate the summer solstice, and with the sun shining, we had a lovely day exploring and enjoying the beauty of the arrival of summer.

🧚 After making our own peg doll fairies the day before, we enjoyed lots of imaginative small world play on our walk in the woods. We found the perfect houses for them in tree trunks and moss-covered stumps, balanced them on branches to make them look like they were flying, made ‘nut bowls’ (bowls for our fairies made out of nut shells and acorn cups) and found feathers, which were perfect ‘broomsticks’ for our fairies to fly on!

🦋 We ran through the meadow with our special summer wands we’d woven the day before, complete with bells and fabric streamers. Amongst the wildflowers, we stopped to watch butterflies, including lots of meadow brown butterflies and later, we took a closer look at lots of buzzing bumble bees and honey bees with legs ladened with pollen.

🌺 Throughout our walk, we gathered treasures including lots of fallen petals and squirrelled them away in our little explorer bags.

🪞 Later, we used these to create our own transient art, sorting and arranging our natural treasures on a mirrored canvas and shared with our friends which ones were our favourites.

🌹 Using a flower press, we worked together to flatten our favourite ones and will use them in future artwork, once they are dry.

🔨 With the rest of our petals and leaves, we had lots of fun, armed with our hammers, exploring printing onto fabric. We carefully arranged the petals and leaves onto fabric, folded it over, and used the hammer to squish and press the petals into the fabric, which released the natural dyes and created prints.

🪵 Before heading home, enjoyed the play area with swings being our favourite today and our hedgehogs working together so nicely to help push each other and take turns.

This week…

🐺 Inspired by Little Red Riding Hood, we headed off into the wild to see if wolves really were ‘big and bad’! It was lovely to see them up so close, and although we definitely don’t agree with the storybook Wolf trying to eat Grandma and Little Red Riding Hood, we came to the conclusion that not all wolves are bad! As they walked by us, we put ourselves in Little Red’s shoes and imagined meeting them in the forest. We came up with words to describe the wolves, which included fluffy, shy, active, beautiful, playful and discussed their features: big ears, pointy nose, bushy tail, long legs, fluffy brown fur, large black eyes.

🌿 As well as seeing the wolves, we were lucky enough to meet lots of beautiful wild animals.

🐒 The squirrel monkeys provided us with lots of entertainment, and I think they were having just as much fun watching us as we were watching them! It was amazing to see their tiny little hands, so similar to ours, carefully holding pieces of red pepper as they munched away! We also watched other monkeys enjoying running along their sky bridge right above our heads.

🦘 As we walked through the wallabies, we spotted some tiny babies and learnt that they are called joeys.

🦥 It was interesting to see unusual animals too, like a speedy armadillo, a very sleepy sloth, some tree climbing prehensile-tailed porcupines and a stripy aardwolf, which, despite its name is more closely related to a hyena than a wolf.

🦦 Throughout the day, we listened to keeper talks, including hearing about Tito, the tapir and a capybara called Mike! We watched the mischievous meerkats and two cute otters named Noodles and Rita, being fed too. It was great to find out the animals’ names and learn lots of interesting facts about them.

This week…

👩‍🍳 Our hedgehogs always enjoy cooking, whether that be real-life baking or imaginative role play in their kitchen area, so we continued with their enjoyment of this with them making their own homemade play dough. They did a super job measuring out and mixing their ingredients and exploring the consistency, experimenting with adding more flour or water depending on how dry or wet their mixture was. Our pasta making machine continues to be a much-loved tool with lots of green spaghetti and tagliatelle being made! We had little ball cakes and even some animal-shaped biscuits too, along with dough which had been given a wilder edge with cuttings of greenery, such as ferns and herb leaves.

🧙‍♀️ As play progressed, the left over ingredients became of interest to our hedgehogs, and before too long, they were busy together spooning the last of the flour into the left over water. Adding lots of leaves and cuttings to their concoction, they were next on the hunt for bubbles, happily finding an old hand soap dispenser still containing the gold-dust liquid of soap! With lots of stirring, their potion soon had the bubbly topping they desired. Now they decided that more magical leaves and cuttings were needed, so it was off to the herb border to cut and collect some more. Like three little witches, they sat together laughing away, stirring stirring, telling me they were going to use it to put a ‘freeze’ spell on me! haha

This week…

Despite the very heavy rain and hailstones, we managed to make the most of our day at Bateman’s, once home to the author of The Jungle Book, Rudyard Kipling.

🐵 We were lucky enough have double the wild animal fun, as we not only explored the house looking out for The Jungle Book artefacts, but in the grounds there was a Monkey Puzzle trail too. Armed with our Monkey Puzzle book (which just about survived the rain) and our trail map, we were off on an adventure completing activities along the way and stamping our map.

🌧️ I love the way our hedgehogs simply carry on with their day having fun, almost oblivious to the weather - shows just how outdoorsy they are! So much so that when it came to lunchtime, they were still asking for me to get the picnic blanket out so we could have a picnic on the grass, despite the heavens opening! haha Thankfully, with a very, very short break in the downpours, we did manage to enjoy our picnic, but huddled together on a picnic bench!

🎶 On our exploration around the house, the National Trust volunteers were all so lovely to our little hedgehogs, with so much chatting and interaction. One nice lady even showed us how the gramophone and phonograph worked and played some music on it for us to listen to. We also listened to If, one of Kipling’s famous poems on an old radio. This was a great way for our hedgehogs to see firsthand how technology has developed, with everything nowadays being accessible by a mobile phone!

🐘 With our love of wild animals continuing, we have been enjoying lots of storytelling together, including Elmer.

🎨 As well as the story itself, we had a great discussion about shapes, colours and patterns of Elmer and his elephant friends when they paint themselves for Elmer Day. Inspired by this, we created our own Elmers exploring printing with duplo blocks and some of our wooden building blocks.

As we say at Happy Hedgehogs:

(to the tune of ABBA’s Money, Money, Money! Hehe)

And yes, our homemade lion pizzas were so yummy.

Our hedgehogs demonstrated super teamwork as always, with our younger hedgehogs counting their spoonfuls and our older hedgehogs checking the exact measurements on the scales. We discussed the job of the yeast to help our dough rise and enjoyed feeling the sticky, stretchy texture of the dough as we kneaded it, rolled it in a ball, flattened it and stretched it to create a base. After spreading the tomato paste onto our base, we had fun adding toppings to make the face of a lion to give it a wild animal twist, as we are all enjoying exploring wild animals at the moment.

Last week…
💚🦔💚

As well as our usual time in the garden with messy play fun, our actual garden also provided lots of learning opportunities in itself, observing nature and its changes.

🍓 We were excited to see that the first strawberries had turned red and were ready for us to harvest. We enjoyed these with our afternoon snack and are waiting patiently for more to be ready to eat.

🫛 We noticed the first green beans and pea pods starting to form on our tepee. We discussed the progress of the rest of the vegetable patch and reminisced about last year when we would sit and pop the pea pods, which we can’t wait to do this year too!

🍃 We have also been keeping an eye on an accidental oak sapling after a rogue acorn escaped from our garden kitchen resources and found its way into the soil of our vegetable patch! It now has proper oak tree-shaped leaves!

🫙 We helped return a confused damselfly to the garden, after it flew into our playroom and couldn’t work out how to get back out! Whilst it was in the glass, we were able to look at it up close and noticed its beautiful green and black pattern.

🐝 We all enjoy watching the bees visiting our flowers, with one of our younger hedgehogs completely captivated by them. With one of our hedgehogs wearing her special bee t-shirt, we were able to use this to identify the bees as buff-tailed bumble bees.

🕷️ After numerous trips around the garden, hidden on the underside of the wheelbarrow, a spider came out to say hello to two curious hedgehogs. With the wheelbarrow overturned, they sat for ages watching the spider, who eventually wandered off through the long grass.

This week…
💚🦔💚

What a lovely time we had with our friends from Little Badgers Childminding doing our Big Toddle (a little earlier as the badgers are on holiday next week).

Our wild walk was filled with lots of fun:

🦁 We had lots of discussions about wild animals using some tricky vocabulary, such as carnivore, herbivore, predator, prey and camouflage. Conversations covered some interesting facts: how hippos can’t swim and actually walk and bounce in the water, how zebras, despite not blending in with their environment are actually camouflaged when they are stood together, that a group of zebras is called a dazzle, how tricky it is for giraffes to bend down to drink and how koalas spend most of their day sleeping!

🎶 We sang and danced to some of our favourite wild animal songs, including Down In The Jungle, Five Little Monkeys, Jungle Safari Dance, and of course Animal Freeze Song!

🪵 We manoeuvred some large branches in the den area showing lots of great teamwork.

🦓 We made homes for our toy animals complete with grass cuttings for food, and trotted them over statues and tree trunks.

🌳 We climbed trees, hung from them like monkeys and wrapped ourselves around them like koalas.

📖 Taking shelter from the rain, we sat beneath the trees and enjoyed storytime together, reading Monkey Puzzle and Giraffes Can’t Dance.

🍪 With the rain continuing, we enjoyed the novelty of picnicking under the trees with puddlesuits on and wellies off comfy on our blanket enjoying the last of our homemade bear paw biscuits.

💧 We continued our walk once the sun reappeared, and upon finding rainwater collected in a bowl-like sculpture, we stirred with sticks, adding leaves, buttercups and daisies making a potion, with one hedgehog telling me she was putting a spell on the adults!

🛝 Before heading home, we enjoyed the very slippery slides at the park!
