Looking for something a little different to do while staying at Slade House CL?

Just the other side of Boston from us, at Freiston Shore, you’ll find the We’ll Meet Again WW2 Museum – a brilliant local attraction dedicated to bringing the story of the Second World War to life.

The museum originally started as a mobile educational project visiting schools before opening its permanent museum at Freiston. Today there are extensive displays covering both military life and what everyday life was like for civilians on the Home Front.

There’s a huge collection of wartime memorabilia, uniforms and equipment, along with some really interesting hands-on exhibits. One of the highlights is a replica Lancaster bomber cockpit where visitors can experience what flying the aircraft was like using virtual reality.

There’s also the Ration Book Cafe on site, so you can stop for a drink and something to eat while you’re there. And with Freiston Shore nature reserve only a short walk away, you could easily combine the two and make a day of it.

It’s one of those places that you might not expect to find tucked away in the Lincolnshire countryside, but it regularly gets fantastic feedback and is well worth adding to your list of places to visit while staying with us at Slade House CL.

PLEASE NOTE....only open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays

Fancy seeing Boston from a different point of view while you’re staying at Slade House CL?

The Boston Belle offers relaxing passenger boat trips along the River Witham, giving you a completely different view of Boston and the surrounding countryside. There are also longer trips and special cruises at certain times of the year, including wildlife and seal-watching trips.

The boat departs from the Sluice Bridge in Boston, and while you’re there, The Lock Cafe is also highly recommended for a coffee, breakfast or something to eat before or after your trip.

I’ve lived in Boston for 16 years and I’m slightly ashamed to admit I’ve never actually taken a trip on the Boston Belle myself......However, plenty of guests who’ve stayed with us at Slade House CL have been on it and have come back telling us how much they enjoyed it, so perhaps it’s about time I took their advice and gave it a go myself.

It’s one of those local attractions that’s easy to overlook when you live nearby, but if you’re visiting the area it sounds like a lovely way to spend a few hours and see Boston from a different perspective.

Looking for a peaceful few hours while staying at Slade House CL?

Ayscoughfee Hall Museum and Gardens in Spalding is well worth a visit. The Grade I listed hall dates back to around 1451 and tells the story of Spalding through its Medieval, Georgian and Victorian features.

Outside are five acres of beautiful gardens, including historic yew hedges, an ornamental lake, an 18th-century ice house and the impressive war memorial designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. There is also a café and children’s play area, making it a lovely stop for couples and families alike.

The gardens are free to enter and just a few minutes’ walk from Spalding town centre. Another great local day out to enjoy during your stay at Slade House CL.

Just a few miles from Slade House CL, Frampton Marsh is one of the country’s leading birdwatching destinations. Some of our guests choose to stay with us specifically to visit the reserve, returning at different times of year to see the changing wildlife.

The RSPB first purchased saltmarsh here in 1984 to protect its important breeding population of redshanks. Over the years, more land was added and transformed into the wonderful mixture of freshwater scrapes, reedbeds, wet grassland and saltmarsh that visitors enjoy today.

Every season brings something different. Spring and summer are excellent for avocets, redshanks, skylarks, whimbrels and large flocks of lapwings. During winter, thousands of ducks gather on the scrapes, while brent geese and hunting hen harriers can also be seen. Rare visitors regularly attract keen birdwatchers from across the country too.

There are three signposted trails, three birdwatching hides and plenty of viewpoints around the reserve. The visitor centre overlooks the reedbed lagoon, where ducks and swans can often be watched without even stepping outside. Friendly staff and volunteers can advise what has recently been spotted, and binoculars are available to hire. There is also a café serving drinks, light lunches and homemade cakes.

Whether you are a serious birdwatcher, a wildlife photographer or simply enjoy a peaceful walk in the countryside, Frampton Marsh is well worth adding to your plans while staying with us.

Have you visited Boston Stump while staying with us at Slade House CL?

Despite its famous nickname, the Stump’s real name is St Botolph’s Church. It is one of the largest parish churches in England, with its magnificent medieval tower rising around 272 feet above the town and visible for miles across the flat Lincolnshire countryside.....if you stand at our entrance with the site behind you you can actually see the stump through a gap in the trees on the skyline.

Work on the present church began in 1309, with the main building completed by around 1390. Construction of the tower started around 1450 and was finally completed in 1520.

Today, this Grade I listed landmark remains one of Boston’s most recognisable sights and is well worth exploring during your stay.

Have you visited the Stump, climbed the tower or taken a good photograph of it? Share your pictures and experiences in the comments.

CL Sites….. similar to pubs/shops/libraries etc use them or lose them. We like many others are considering alternative uses for the site as costs increase and bookings decrease. We love sharing our site but hay is looking like a better contender 😬

This little fella is just an hour old…. And amazingly just 1100 grams….our dog had pups that were bigger!

We are open for the season! ☺️ it’s been a quiet start but how much of that is down to the poor weather or the increasing costs of fuel? Can’t wait to welcome you all this season and we have lambs arriving at the moment! 😍 not to mention our cute Pygmy goats who were a late addition last year (Clarkson, Hammond and May) you can decide who is who when you meet them 😂
