Welcome back and happy new year to all our students and patients!
For many of our students, they will have started their studies after time in another career. If this is you, you are not alone at the College of Osteopaths.
Every week in clinic we see how life experience helps students connect with patients, listen well and work confidently in practical settings. The blog highlights how skills you have built over many years are now helping you become the practitioner you want to be.

As we head into the New Year, feeling settled before a clinic session can make a real difference to how the experience feels. Students often tell us they feel more confident when they take a couple of simple steps:
⏰ Arrive a little early
Giving yourself a few extra minutes helps you ease into the session.
📖 Look over your notes
A quick refresh can help you feel more grounded.
🧘♀️ Take a moment to breathe
A short pause helps your focus and helps set the tone for your patients too.
If you ever want more support around clinic or preparing for sessions there is plenty to explore on our website or in our blog >> https://bit.ly/4oTvJBW
The team at the College of Osteopaths would like to send you all ‘Season's Greetings’ and wish you a wonderful New Year.
As our staff and students take a break, our clinics will be closed from 5pm on Tuesday, 23rd Dec and re-open at 9am on Monday, 5th Jan.

One of the things we love most about the College of Osteopaths is the variety of paths that bring people here.
Many of our students are on a second or even third career. Their past experience in roles like teaching, retail, sport or healthcare gives them a real head start with skills such as talking to people clearly, staying calm under pressure and managing busy days.
Our latest blog explains how these strengths feed into osteopathic training and features current student Marcus sharing how his previous work supports his studies and patient care.

Clinic can feel busy and full on at times, particularly in these winter months. Taking a moment afterwards to reflect helps you recognise your progress and spot what is shaping you as a future practitioner.
Here are three simple prompts to help you get started:
🌟 What felt good today?
Maybe you handled a conversation well or felt confident with a technique. Celebrate it.
⚡ What challenged me?
Was there a moment that threw you or something you found tricky?
🎯 What do I want to work on next?
Choose one small thing. It keeps everything manageable.
Jotting down these small reflections help you learn from real experience rather than worrying about perfection. You are building your professional confidence one clinic session at a time.
Happy Graduation Day to our incredible Class of 2025 Summer Graduates! 🌟Today is your day, a celebration of hard work, late nights and determination. We are so proud of all that you’ve accomplished and can’t wait to see the amazing things you’ll do next. Congratulations! 🎉🎓 The College of Osteopaths University of Derby
Starting your first patient appointments as a student osteopath can feel both exciting and daunting.
Our latest blog shares practical tips on preparing for clinic, managing nerves, building rapport with patients, and making the most of reflection afterwards.
Clinic Tutor Liz Elander reminds students: “Top tip for current students: you’ll never be asked to do anything you haven’t been trained to do. As clinic tutors, we know exactly where you are in the programme and we’ll support you at every step.”
