Wanted: Studio, office, workshop, container space
https://charliemaguiredrums.com
Hello Everyone!
My name is Charlie Maguire, I’m a professional drummer and drum teacher based in Borehamwood. Unfortunately the studio I work and teach from has been sold and as a result we’re in a desperate search for new premises by the end of the month. We’re looking for astudio, workshop or office space that could be soundproofed (if it isn’t already) or that doesn’t have sound restrictions.
In addition to the search we’re also exploring the idea of converting a shipping container into a studio which we just need a very small plot of land. We’re particularly interested in any farm land, business park or industrial estates that would be happy to host a container. If anyone knows of any space’s that would be suitable please get in touch 🤩
About us:
We’re a small business with lots of excellent drum students who are super creative and thriving whilst learning to play the drums. We also have outstanding teachers who are all professional drummers making waves within the music industry.
In addition to the students we support, the studio is my personal work space. I’ve played drums for Gregory Porter, Beverley Knight and Michael Ball as well as in West End musicals, but sadly none of that would be possible without having access to a studio space to work, prepare and practice.

(From my journal... I'm so woke) ignore the grammar etc, It's just stream of consciousness writing and I've copied it down the same way...

"I could talk all day about practice so I'll try not to bore myself but here are my insights (from this period).
Recording: Record everything from the beginning stages of practice, that way you're not invested in the outcome yet and you will immediately see what needs work (even if it's obvious without a recording). The opposite way (my usual method) is to work on something and record it when it's 'there', inevitably, when you find faults with it, it's a massive knock to the confidence, because at this stage you've invested time into it and you thought it sounded good, so you stop trusting your 'live' judgement. By recording form the beginning, you're witnessing the progress as it happens so the feedback loop is more efficient and you won't be shocked by anything sounding unexpectedly bad, because it's a daily recording"

These are little mental notes to myself. I think recording oneself is probably the most effective development method there is, but it's actually a treacherous path to tread, because the very nature of facing your deficiencies head on every single day will obviously start to effect your self esteem. The paradox is, if you record your practice (and if you're practicing the right stuff it won't always sound great) then you become self aware, which is great for development but not for confidence, and on the bandstand we need to confidence in any and all situations. That's the job of the drummer before anything else; to lead the band with the conviction of someone who who has never considered that they sound anything other than fu***ng great. My advise is, if you commit to recording yourself (in practice) make sure you don't stop what you're working on until it gets to a place you're satisfied with, if you stop before that then be prepared to start mental battle you don't want to get into.
