What does a day supporting school attendance actually look like? π
The answer? No two days are quite the same.
Behind the scenes, our Attendance team could be:
π« Working alongside schools to understand attendance challenges
π€ Speaking with families and building relationships
π Exploring the individual barriers affecting a child or young person
π± Helping to shape practical plans that support positive change
It's work built around conversations, relationships and understanding β because every family's experience of attendance is different.

Moving from relaxed holiday routines to structured school days can feel overwhelming β°
Around two weeks before term starts, gradually reintroducing earlier bedtimes, regular mealtimes or a practice morning routine can help make September feel more familiar.
Start small and move at a pace that works for your child π±

Returning to school is rarely just one change π
For autistic and neurodivergent children, or children who may be awaiting assessment, the start of a new term can mean adjusting to different routines, people, environments and expectations all at once.
Some children will talk openly about feeling anxious. For others, it may appear through repetitive questions, disrupted sleep, withdrawal, irritability or an increased reliance on familiar routines.
These responses are not necessarily a child being deliberately difficult. They may be signs that the transition is demanding more energy than we can see π
Recognising what may sit beneath the behaviour is an important first step in helping children feel understood and supported π

Not every success story starts with a major breakthrough π±
Sometimes it starts with:
β’ Attending a lesson for the first time in weeks π
β’ Getting through the school gates with a little less worry
β’ Feeling confident enough to ask for help π
β’ Taking part in an activity that previously felt impossible
These moments can easily go unnoticed by others, but for a child or young person, they may represent weeks or months of progress.
The journey back towards confidence, engagement and wellbeing is rarely a straight line. That's why celebrating small wins matters so much π

Today is National Play Day π
Play is about much more than having fun. It helps children build confidence, develop communication skills, strengthen relationships and explore the world around them.
For some children and young people, play can also provide a safe and natural way to express themselves, regulate emotions and connect with others π
Our multidisciplinary team, including Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Psychotherapists and Educational Psychologists, sees every day how meaningful play can support development and wellbeing π±
Today is a reminder of the important role play has in helping children learn, grow and feel connected.
