£65 for a place on Level 2 Food Safety. £445 to have us train your whole kitchen on site, up to 12 people.

There's a persistent myth that the law names a specific food hygiene certificate. It doesn't. Regulation 852/2004 says food handlers must be supervised, instructed and trained commensurate with their work. No qualification is named. What happens in practice is that your environmental health officer, your insurer and your clients all expect Level 2, and it's the quickest way to evidence competence.

Full paediatric first aid or emergency paediatric first aid? They are not interchangeable, and picking the cheaper one can leave a setting short.

The short version: the emergency course is one day and covers the life-threatening emergencies. The full course is two days and adds the conditions and injuries you are far more likely to meet in a nursery. Allergic reactions, febrile seizures, head injuries, burns, bites, the lot.

Which one you need depends on your role in the setting and the ratios you're counting towards.

If you work in early years, paediatric first aid isn't a nice-to-have. It's written into the EYFS framework, and Ofsted will ask.

The two things settings most often get wrong: who counts towards the requirement on outings as well as on site, and letting certificates drift past three years because nobody owns the spreadsheet.

We run Paediatric First Aid as an open course at £105 a place, or on site for your whole team at £650 for up to 12.

Full course or emergency paediatric? That depends on your role. We've explained the difference.

Twenty minutes. Not ten, not "until it stops hurting".

Cool a burn under cool running water for a full 20 minutes, ideally within three hours of the injury. Then cover it. Cling film laid over the burn, not wrapped around it.

What not to do: butter, creams, oils, toothpaste, ice, or a plaster stuck to the skin. Every one of those makes the job harder for whoever treats it next.

It's the single most common thing we correct on a first aid course, and it's the one most likely to change an outcome.

Sending eight people out to separate course dates is the expensive way to do this.

Our group courses are priced per course, not per person. One fixed price for up to 12 people, delivered at your premises, on a date that fits around your rotas. We bring the trainer, the manikins and everything else.

Emergency First Aid at Work for a team of 12 is £495. Manual Handling and COSHH are £370. Paediatric First Aid is £650.

Tell us what you need and how many, and we'll quote it.

One day. £85. One person trained and certificated for three years.

Emergency First Aid at Work is the course most offices, shops and small sites actually need. CPR, choking, bleeding, unconsciousness, shock, and what to do in the ten minutes before an ambulance arrives.

It's six hours of contact time, and you spend most of them on the floor practising rather than watching slides. Come in clothes you don't mind kneeling in.

Places are booked individually, so you don't pay for a whole group course to train one person.

"How many first aiders do we legally need?"

There isn't a number. HSE has never published a ratio, and any provider quoting you one is making it up. What the law requires is a first aid needs assessment. You look at your hazards, your accident history, shift patterns, lone workers, how far you are from an ambulance, and you decide what's adequate.

The one figure HSE does state: with 25 or more employees, even in a low-hazard office, you should have at least one first aider.

We've written the whole thing up, with a template you can use.

Your first aid certificate is valid for three years. Not three years and a bit.

Once it expires, HSE's position is blunt: that person is no longer considered competent to act as a workplace first aider. So if yours runs out this winter, book the requalification now rather than in the week it lapses.

First Aid at Work requalification is two days, and it's £95 for an open place at one of our venues. If you've several people due at once, we'll come to you instead.

Not sure of your date? Check the certificate. The three years run from completion.
