One of the biggest shifts in GCSE English is moving beyond simply spotting a technique.

A student might say:

“That’s a metaphor.”

But the next question should be:

So what?

Why did the writer choose it?
What does it suggest?
What effect does it create?

That deeper thinking is what helps students develop stronger analysis.

And it's a skill that will continue to matter beyond GCSE English too.

Would your child be able to explain the “why”?

September is nearly over. So, how is your child’s English actually going?

Ask them:

✨ Do you know what you’re working on?
✨ Do you know what you need to improve?
✨ Are you reading regularly?
✨ Are you confident with your current topics?
✨ Do you know your next step?

If they can’t answer everything, don’t panic.

It doesn’t necessarily mean they’re behind.

It may simply mean they need more clarity and support.

If you’d like help understanding what to look for, my Free GCSE English Parent Guide is a good place to start.

And if they need more structured support, the GCSE English Mastery Programme can provide that longer-term direction.

What is one thing your child feels confident about in English?

Learning a new skill is messy, certainly not linear, and takes effort and practice.

But it’s also great fun!

With the right materials, strategies and processes in place, and by learning from what you like and don’t like about what you’ve produced so far, you can quickly move from the mess into something beautifully perfected!

Why not see how I can help you or your child do this in English ?

I teach with clear strategies to support rapid improvement, where we learn from past attempts to reach aspirational goals by GCSE!

What’s a new skill you’re trying to learn? Tell me in the comments!

A Tutor’s Advice: Don’t Wait Until Year 11

One piece of advice I’d give every parent: don’t wait until Year 11.

Your Year 10 child doesn’t need to be doing exam revision every evening.

But they can start developing the skills GCSE English requires:

đź“– Reading carefully
🔎 Thinking about a writer’s choices
✏️ Explaining ideas clearly
đź’ˇ Using evidence effectively

These skills take time to develop.

Starting earlier gives students more time to practise and build confidence.

If you’re wondering what your child should be working on now, my Free GCSE English Parent Guide can help you get started.

What part of GCSE English would you most like your child to feel confident about?

For Year 11, “get a better grade” is a good ambition. But to achieve it, your child needs to know what they’ll do differently. 🎯

A stronger goal might be:

“I want to improve my analysis of language and explain my ideas more clearly.”

Now there’s something specific to practise.

Good goals help students understand:

✨ What they need to work on
✨ What progress looks like
✨ Where they might need support

The aim isn’t simply to work harder.

It’s to work on the right things.

This is the kind of focused skill development we work on through the GCSE English Mastery Programme.

It supports students to make targeted improvements that make a big difference to their performance in the exams.

What skill would make the biggest difference to your child’s confidence?

A little English challenge for you and your child. đź“–

Choose one sentence from something they’re reading.

Then ask:

“What is the writer doing here?”

Look at one word or phrase and ask:

✨ Why was it chosen?
✨ What does it suggest?
✨ What feeling does it create?
✨ Why might the writer want the reader to respond this way?

It doesn’t need to become a full English lesson.

Just a few minutes of thinking like this can help develop stronger analysis.

Want to give it a try?

If your child has just started Year 10, there’s something they need to understand about GCSE English.

It’s not simply about remembering information.

Students need to learn how to:

✨ Understand the question
✨ Select relevant evidence
✨ Analyse a writer’s choices
✨ Structure their ideas clearly

These are skills that develop over time, with the right strategy.

So if your child isn’t completely confident yet, that’s okay.

Starting early gives them time to practise without the pressure of Year 11.

That’s exactly why structured support can be so valuable.

My GCSE English Mastery Programme offers just that.

It provides structured support, with the right strategies, to get your child GCSE ready with confidence.

How is your Year 10 finding GCSE English so far?

September is a great time to build simple English habits before GCSE revision gets intense.

I’d start with three:

đź“– Read regularly
Even a few pages each week helps. This could be from one of the set texts, but reading anything will help develop comprehension skills and build vocabulary.

✏️ Review what they’ve learned
Small reviews are better than leaving everything until exam season. Make sure they focus on what they don’t know so well, rather than just going over things they do already know.

🎯 Know what needs improving
Students make better progress when they know what to focus on.

The goal isn’t to give your child more work.

It’s to make the work they’re doing more purposeful.

If you’re unsure where to start, my Free GCSE English Parent Guide can help.

Which habit would make the biggest difference for your child?

It’s Roald Dahl Day! 📚

His stories are a great reminder that strong writing isn’t about using the most complicated vocabulary.

It’s about making choices that create an effect.

When your child is analysing a writer, encourage them to ask:

✨ Why this word?
✨ Why this description?
✨ Why this character?
✨ What effect does it have on the reader?

Those simple questions can help take an English answer much further.

Now I want to know...

What was your favourite Roald Dahl story growing up?

Mine has to be The Twits! You’ve got to love to hate them!

A little reading now can make a big difference to GCSE English. đź“–

Regular reading helps students become more familiar with:

✨ Vocabulary
✨ Different ideas
✨ Writing styles
✨ How writers create meaningI
✨ Increases imagination

And they don’t need to read for hours.

A few pages regularly is a great place to start.

The important thing is helping reading become a habit.

And it’s great fun too!

If your child isn’t into novels, try a magazine, an article, or even a bit of Manga! It all helps.

So, a question for parents...

What is your child reading at the moment?

👇 Tell me below. It doesn’t have to be a school book!
