World Space Week

WSW is an international celebration of science and technology, and their contribution to the betterment of the human condition. The United Nations General Assembly declared in 1999 that World Space Week will be held each year from October 4-10. These dates commemorate two events:

October 4, 1957: Launch of the first human-made Earth satellite, Sputnik 1, thus opening the way for space exploration

October 10, 1967: The signing of the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activites of States in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies.

World Space Week consists of space education and outreach events held by space agencies, aerospace companies, schools, planetaria, museums, and astronomy clubs around the world in a common timeframe.

The goals of WSW:

Provide unique leverage in space outreach and education
Educate people around the world about the benefits that they receive from space
Encourage greater use of space for sustainable economic development
Demonstrate public support for space programs
Excite young people about science, technology, engineering, and math
Foster international cooperation in space outreach and education.

It's Grandparents Day!

In the UK, the celebration was founded by the charity Age Concern. It has been celebrated on the first Sunday in October since 2008.

This day is celebrated across the world, though on different dates: in France, a Grandmothers' Day is still celebrated on the first Sunday in March. In Germany, Grandmothers' Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in October, while there are also days to recognise grandparents in Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands and the Philippines.

Whatever the date, let's celebrate our grandparents by giving them their time in the spotlight.

And it's a day to hear from grandparents too. What's the best thing about being a grandparent? Is it seeing a sparkle in their eyes because they are happy to see you? Perhaps it's because it makes you feel younger.

Cycle to School Week 2026 runs from Monday 5th to Friday 9th October 2026, according to Bikeability and multiple UK campaign sources.

Cycle to School Week is a national UK campaign encouraging children, families, and schools to choose cycling for the school journey. It promotes healthier travel, reduced congestion, and improved wellbeing. The 2026 theme highlights the “real cost” of the school run, including money, time, and environmental impact.

Happy National Poetry Day.

National Poetry Day is a UK wide annual celebration of poetry, held on the first Thursday of October and founded in 1994 by William Sieghart.

National Poetry Day is a British campaign designed to promote poetry through public performances, readings, school activities, and nationwide events. It engages millions of people each year and is coordinated by the Forward Arts Foundation, a charity dedicated to widening poetry’s audience.
Its purpose is:
• Encourage people of all ages to read, write, and enjoy poetry
• Bring poetry into everyday spaces such as schools, workplaces, cafés, libraries, and public transport
• Support creative expression and highlight poetry’s cultural impact
I have 2 favourite poems – one is very short and one is very long. The short one is by Spike Milligan –

The International Day of Older Persons is observed annually on October 1st to recognize the contributions of older individuals and to highlight issues affecting them. This day promotes awareness about the importance of ensuring that people can grow old with dignity and purpose. It encourages society to value and support older persons through inclusive policies and practices.

Why not have a chat with older people that you are close to, and ask them if they feel included in today's modern society; and take a moment to think about how you could make things better...

World Vegetarian Day is commemorated every year on October 1st. Around 10% of the world's population is vegetarian, and more people are making changes in their lifestyles to be more sustainable and healthy, and eat less meat.
October 1st, World Vegetarian Day, is also the first day of Vegetarian Awareness Month, which ends with World Vegan Day on November 1st.

World Vegetarian Day was founded in 1977 by the North American Vegetarian Society, with the intent to raise awareness about the benefits of a vegetarian lifestyle among non-vegetarians.
Even just reducing your meat consumption to once a week can have major benefits for your health. When you're choosing to eat healthier foods rather than meat your body gains all the more important nutrients such as magnesium, good fats, fibre, folic acid, and vitamins, that meat just doesn't provide.

Rivers are vital for ecosystems, human settlements, agriculture, and recreation. National Rivers Day encourages people to:
• Learn about local rivers and their wildlife

• Enjoy recreational activities such as fishing, canoeing, or paddleboarding
• Raise awareness about threats like pollution, climate change, and habitat loss

The month of September is officially 'Snack-tember'. It is a British Nutrition Foundation initiative held every September to help children aged 5–16 choose healthier, more sustainable snacks, focusing on more fruit/veg and wholegrains and less saturated fat, salt and sugar.
