V excited about being invited to this special conference! Hope to see you there 🤓

We are pleased to announce that our keynote speaker for the 2027 Humber Counselling and Psychotherapy Conference is Susie Hewitt.

Susie is the Founder and Director of the Psychotherapy Institute, a TA Training Institute in Greater Manchester. She is a Certified Transactional Analyst (CTA-P) and a Teaching and Supervising Transactional Analyst (TSTA-P), with more than 17 years of clinical experience. Her work spans clinical practice, supervision and training, trainee development and governance, and organisational leadership, and she has a long-standing involvement in UKCP serving on the HIPC Training Standards Committee since summer 2023. Susie is a member of UKCP, BACP and UKATA.

In her keynote Susie will invite us to pause and reflect on these questions together: What holds our professional identity steady when so much around it is in flux? What do we want to protect, and what might we need to let go of? And how do we shape the future of psychotherapy rather than simply respond to it? Drawing on clinical practice, training and organisational leadership, Susie hopes to open a conversation that is both honest about the challenges and hopeful about what we might become.

Good therapy isn’t about having all the answers.
It’s about learning to notice what is happening — in the words being spoken, in the silences, in relationships, and sometimes in ourselves as therapists.
The ability to recognise patterns, understand the purpose a defence may once have served, resist the urge to immediately rescue or reassure, and stay curious about the wider system around a client are skills that develop over time.

Through training, supervision, self-awareness and reflective practice, therapists can become more thoughtful about not only what they do in the therapy room, but why they do it.

Today at 6.30am I was online with 74 other Transactional Analysts from around the world preparing for three days of CTA & TSTA Exams. I always feel privileged to serve as an Examiner at these ITAA IBOC exams! It's going to be a very busy 3 days for me in the TSTA Exam track, and I'm looking forward to learning from both the candidates and my colleagues 🤓

What could a new Mental Health Strategy for England mean for psychotherapy and the wider mental health workforce?

The Professional Standards Authority (PSA) has responded to the Government’s call for evidence, highlighting the importance of building regulation, registration and public protection into mental health reform from the outset.

Its response considers the wider mental health workforce, the future of counselling and psychotherapy, workforce development, and the growing use of AI in mental health services.

For our profession, these are important conversations to follow as mental health services and the workforce continue to evolve.

Adoption can hold many experiences at once — questions about identity and belonging, love and loss, curiosity, uncertainty, and feelings that may shift throughout adult life.

For therapists, working well with adult adoptees means making space for that complexity without assuming what adoption means for each individual.

Our 1 Day CPD on Working with Adoption explores some of the specific considerations involved in working therapeutically with adult adoptees, including attachment trauma, identity, autonomy and agency within the therapeutic relationship.

The workshop will also introduce a basic treatment plan that can be adapted for client work, alongside a reading list bringing together key writing and research in this area.
