Libraries as warm spaces. Librarians who changed things. Childhood Saturdays and adult
lifelines. Music discovered in reading rooms. Safe corners in hard times.

Every single response is part of something we’re building, a real record of what libraries
have meant to this community. Thank you for trusting us with your stories.

Saturday morning library trips. A whole genre of childhood.

The ritual of choosing. The weight of the bag on the way home. The negotiation over how
many you were allowed. The panic three weeks later when you couldn’t find one of them.
Tell us about your Saturday library routine, as a child, or as a parent now.

Tag someone who was part of it.

Libraries and music have more in common than you might think.

Both are places where you go to find something you didn’t know you were looking for. Both have been central to arts education in this country.

Many libraries have music collections, listening rooms, instrument lending schemes.

And then there’s the music that references libraries, everything from the quiet intensity of
studying with a soundtrack, to Arcade Fire’s Ready to Start, to the whole aesthetic of lo-fi
hip hop that basically lives in imaginary libraries.

Did you ever discover music through your library? Or use the library as a place to listen?

Tell us.

Behind every great library is a librarian who knew exactly what you needed before you did.

The one who remembered what you borrowed last time. The one who set something aside
because they thought of you. The one who handed a nervous teenager a book that changed everything and made it look like an accident.

Is there a librarian you remember?

Tell us about them: https://writingbolton.org/community/library/

Libraries have always been more than books.

Story time. Homework clubs. English classes. A warm seat when you needed one.

What did your library give you beyond the shelves?

We’d add: a library is not just for people who think of themselves as readers. It never has
been.

Thank you for sharing, the stories coming in have been extraordinary.

From their first home on Victoria Square in 1853 to the beautiful Le Mans Crescent building you see today, Bolton Central Library has been at the heart of our town's story.

Long before streaming, search engines, or smartphones, the library was our window to the world. If you wanted to learn, escape, think, or share a Saturday morning with your children, you went to the library.

It’s still there. Still doing all of that.

This month we’re celebrating what it, and libraries everywhere, have meant to the
people who’ve walked through those doors.

Share your library memory with us.
