The Nest Nursery

✨Teaching Independence and life skills ✨
In the Nest, promoting independence and teaching life skills is something that is very important to us, with a strong emphasis on this throughout our curriculum.
We focus on self care skills such as washing our hands, brushing our teeth and putting on our own coats. We also encourage the children to find their own boxes and pegs, recognising their own picture and name. We encourage them to find their own nappy box selecting their wipes and nappy at changing times.
We visit the community and shops regularly, promoting safety, allowing the children to choose and pay for their own snacks. Some children then go on to make their own snack, pour their own drink and even tidy up after themselves. This is done at each child's level, helping them to reach their full potential ❤️

This week we have had lots of fun and engaging activities going on within all of our rooms.
In the Nest we have been focusing on emotions, looking at The Bear Hunt in the Burrow and getting messy in the Den, with sensory week and edible paint! Have a little look at some of our exciting activities.

THE NEST NEURODIVERSITY AMBASSADOR PROGRAMME

The children at Devonshire Road Primary school have become neurodiversity ambassadors for their school.

Their first session started with exploring what is neurodiversity. The children shared their own experiences of this as well as learning about additional neurodiverse conditions.

The children explored what total communication means and learned how to navigate different communication systems including paper based and power based symbol supports with the help of

The children got to meet some of the children from The Nest and learned how to communicate with the children in a way that works for them.

The children also came to The Nest and planned a therapy session for themselves! They came up with the ideas and delivered it amazingly!

It was incredible to see them spontaneously use signing, symbols, talking buttons and power based apps to support communication. Our children LOVED it as you can see.

The next step was thinking about how the children were going to return to school and continue to support, inspire and celebrate neurodiversity and continue to bring about change. One of their first considerations was them discussing what could be available at their upcoming Christmas fair. They suggested (without any support) about having visual reminders that it was upcoming, symbolled timelines to show what stalls were available and when and symbols for children to express how they felt about the event.

There aren't any words to describe the immense pride I felt during this project. Mini speeches in the making!

The Nest Neurodiversity Ambassador Programme is delivered over five sessions and is something that is very close to our hearts in the nest. So many of our children have to try to change and adapt their communication to meet the needs or expectations of others or face significant challenges when not being understood.
With lots more children being neurodiverse we wanted to support children to understand what this means as well and support and celebrate this.
