**Ditch the screentime before bed!**
Screentime before bedtime can affect sleep, avoiding screentime before bed is vital for getting better sleep. Lack of sleep can affect physical and mental development and regulation of emotions.
The light emitted from screens, especially bright or close light, can signal your brain that it’s still daytime, delaying the release of melatonin, the hormone that promotes sleep. This effect is intensified by mental stimulation fast-paced content, which keeps the brain active and alert, making it harder to fall asleep.
Experts suggest avoiding screens for at least 1–2 hours before bed, with some recommending up to 2–3 hours for optimal sleep. The exact timing depends on individual sensitivity and the type of content consumed. Low-stimulation activities, like reading or listening to calm music, are less disruptive than interactive or emotionally engaging content.
**Practical Tips to Reduce Night time Screen Impact**
1. Remove devices out of sight 2 hours before bed time
2. Bath time, make relaxed, low lighting and calm music
3. Follow bath time with a story. We have a free library at the entrance. Please feel free to use our library. Nothing compares to a story being read to a child by a loved one all cuddled up.
4. If your only option is a story book on you tube for example. Use “night mode” or dim the brightness on devices if you must use them close to bedtime. But do try to use a real book in replacement.
