Today is World Su***de Prevention Day.
Sometimes, simply reaching out and having a conversation — especially with someone you may have lost touch with — could make all the difference.
In my experience, people can be very quick to judge. We tell people to “sort themselves out,” “snap out of it,” or “look at the bright side.”
But if it were really that easy, around 750,000 lives a year wouldn’t be lost to su***de.
As a society, we understand physical illnesses such as cancer. We know that people need support, treatment, compassion and understanding when their bodies are struggling. Yet when someone is struggling mentally, we can sometimes walk away or expect them to deal with it alone — often when they need us most.
You may not be able to fix someone’s problems. You may not have the answers. But you can listen. You can be there. You can let them know they’re not alone.
A simple message, a phone call, a coffee, or asking “Are you really okay?” can mean more than you realise.
It could make all the difference — not just to the person suffering through their darkest days, but also to the family, friends and loved ones who are affected too.
Please reach out. Please listen. Please don’t judge. Sometimes, being there is enough to make someone feel that tomorrow is worth seeing. ❤️
